Ok so some of you may remember the Necrons my nephew painted up about a week ago. He did an awesome job on them and Ive been pretty proud to of been the one to teach him and so on. SO the other day I went to my brothers house to paint some Orks and help him back back into the swing of painting stuff (he chose IG btw lol) Well he said " hey wanna see something thats going to piss you off?"
Of course I said sure and he dumped out the box my nephew keeps his necrons in. WELL instead of waiting 2 days for me to come over and bring my paints he decided to paint the other half of his necrons grey and BRIGHT red. Not only that but instead of taking his time, like I showed him, he painted them as fast as possible. SO the gry is HEAVILY dry brushed on, and the red is just streaked literally from the arm guards almost all the way up to the shoulders.
AND to add insult in injury he barely glued most of them on, so they are practically falling off the bases. I know I shouldnt get to upset about it i mean they are his army and he can paint them however he wants. Not a big deal really. It was just a waste of my paint on the color change. Mostly tho its the fact that they look SO terrible. I feel a little bit let down like he didnt care to remember ANYTHING I taught him.
Whats every one elses thoughts on this? Am I over reacting or what?

Where ever the Emperor needs his eyes

You're not over reacting you put time and effort into teaching him how to do things so its only logical to be upset by this. Try to help him out more if you wish, show him how much better things are when you take your time.

And I don't know if you thought of it but maybe he wanted to try and get things done so he could try and impress you. Kids like to try and show you that they can do things on their own, sure they can be over eager with it, but still they try.

"hey wanna see something thats going to piss you off?"

He did it to piss you off, or what? He just prefers to get them painted?

Stiener- I didnt think of that to be totally honest. That is probably what he was trying to do. The kid looks up to me and my oldest brother (prolly because hes a nerdy kid lol ) I didnt even think of that point.

Arctik - No he didnt do that to piss me off. My brother just knew that it would, simply because I had spent so much time that night teaching his son how to paint.

Thanks that really put it into perspective. Today we are going to a bday party and Ill talk ot Jeremy about it. Maybe shine some light on this whole deal.

I'm sure it wasn't done specifically to annoy you.

You can't expect youngsters to get the whole skill down fast. It takes practice. People have to make their own mistakes.

He probably wanted to get the rest of the army painted quickly and liked the grey and red colour scheme.

I remember being so impatient with my first blood angels I didn't wait for the undercoat to dry, and they ended up being pink.
Kids have pretty short attention spans unfortunately.

You have to remember that he is only 8. He's still a child and whilst you may have taught him how to paint them once, he may need you to show him again. Don't forget that we all learn in different ways. My advice would be to have another painting sessions with him in which you can explain why taking your time over them can reap great rewards. He'll soon come to understand that things look better with a little care and attention. Also, as has been said earlier, he was probably trying to impress you by getting more done.

Don't be too hard on the little guy, we all learn at our own rates. Just be pleased that he's got into the hobby, and who knows, starting so promisingly at such a young age, a golden demon may not be out of the question if that's where his passion lies!

No matter how well you try to teach a child adult painting techniques, more often than not, childish tendencies to rush things will override in spectacular fashion.

As Kilkrazy say its good that he makes his own mistakes. If he keeps at it, and keep making a mess of certain things, he will be all the better painter in the end for having made his initial errors.
