I've been into 40k for only four or five months and started with the AoBR boxed set so I have Ultramarines and Orks. I just tried to copy what a saw when I first bought the set hence having Ultras which now I'm finding a bit of a boring colour scheme. I currently have approximately 900 points of both SM and Orks and the aim is to get to about 1500 points of each and then start a different army. IG & CSM don't really interest me at the moment so I'm likely to choose between Necrons, Tau, Eldar or possibly Tyranids.

Does anyone have any useful hints to help me choose such as ease of painting (my skill is currently just about decent tabletop standard), and how sufficiently different the armies are to warrant starting a third army to complement what I already have? Thanks in advance.

Whoa. It's been almost a whole day and not one person on the forum has an opinion on what is a good beginners army out of Tau, Necrons, Eldar and Tyranids??

I find that hard to believe. I'll go back under my stone then.

Tau

Why? Different from the two armies you already have and give you a variety of painting styles (especially if you include Kroot and Vespids). Downsize for a new players is that they're a fairly difficult army to master if you're new to the game.

Tyranid are fun, but similar to orks.

Necrons are boring

Eldar are difficult to play and are challenging to paint.

All my opinion, so views will likely vary.

OK, I'll try to help.

First off, with 40k, you really should focus on whichever army looks most interesting to you. Despite the noise, 40k armies are (relatively) well-balanced with respect to one another, so choosing one army will not give you massive metagame advantage / disadvantage. Thus, you aren't likely to be especially unhappy with any of your listed choices.

As you have and Orks, and are looking for a 3rd:

- Tau are a good choice that is different and plays differently. Most of the core models (Fire Warriors, Battlesuits, Tanks) are plastic, so it's not too bad on the budget.

- Necrons are very much like SM, and their Codex is very old, and not so much to play against. I'd suggest you avoid this army in favor of one of the others.

- Eldar have a newish Codex, a 4.5 Codex, if you will. It's pretty decent, especially as a new player. But it will want a lot of expensive models, so not a good choice for a budget player. The high specialization is an interesting play style.

- Tyranids have an older Codex, but are still strong. I would suggest this as they are a classic nemesis for SM and Orks.

So in summary, I would rank like this:
1. Tyranids
2. Eldar
3. Tau
4. Necrons

Thanks for the replies. I think I'm leaning towards the Tau at the moment.

Everyone is still embroiled in The Drama. Give it time.

Ease of paint: Necrons.

Interesting game options: Tau.

I'd say Tyranid because you can get away with the bestial and messy
look, but I think you put in just as much time trying to get the numbers of models painted.

Malfred, I think that you should delegate a loyal minion to write an article titled, "Choosing an army".
This one comes up so often and it would be great to point people to a well written article.
If it was a success you could even consider doing them for Warhammer 40K and WFB.
Anyone fancy taking this on?
