I wonder what are the odds of an imperial commissar actually living to see retirement?

Yarrick had his arm snipped off and his eye shot out and he retired.
Then he came back to keep fighting Ghazghkull because eh fights Orks and doesn't afraid of anything.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

I think only Tau retire through advancement. If a Commissar gets to the age of retirement and tries to retire he is probably executed for cowardice.

Cain "retired" to a teaching post, yeah we saw where that got him . Really the odds are not very good for a commisar, the enemy wants him dead and the troops probably hate him just as much as the enemy does. But the thing that probably kills them the most is being noticeable. The whole point of uniforms was so people knew who to shoot (if they don't look like you then it is ok to shoot them, more complex when there are allied groups involved). The commisars uniform doesn't tipically look like the others around him.

Most commissars wouldn't retire until they were unable to continue slaying the Emperor's foes anyways.
They're (x2) dedicated. That's pretty much the job description.

But it wouldn't happen. Even if the commissar had to summararily execute his soldiers through "beating with walking stick" he'd want to keep on fighting.
Anyway, most commisars that retire (which won't be all THAT many) would almost certainly become teachers in a Schola Progenium, or mabye an advisor to a newly conquered planetary governer.
But not Yarrick. HE IZ DA BEST! EVEN DA ORKS FINK SO!

Actually, if you retire in the Guard (or as a commissar) you retire BIG, as in whole Planet is now belonging to the regiment, BIG. Life is good IF you live that long.

Yep. They're usually released on conquered planets.
Of course, that's assuming you actually get to conquer planets. If you're being thrown up against daemons, expect to be purged or at least mind-scrubbed. If you're up against tyranids you'll probably be firebombed. If you're up against orks, your "retirement" will be fighting against orks for the rest of your life. Etc.

It is true that the imperium forgets about soldiers a lot and just leaves them on the planet which is like a retirement. That is until twenty years later when they say what happened to that regiment, find you and send you off to meet another death somewhere desolate before being forgotten again. I dunno maybe some guardsmen who do the truly ridiculous are allowed to retire.
Guardsmen: When do I get to retire from this.
Sergeant: when you single handedly destroy a titan with your lasgun.
Guardsmen: Ok one sec I need to get a camocloak and some climbing gear.
