Sorry for requiring the US dollar amount but it is the easiest conversion for most of us. If you are not sure how to do it, just go to google and type in your amount, your currency code and then 'in USD'. So type in something like '100 AUD in USD' to convert 100 AU$ to US$. Other major currency codes are CAD for canadian, GBP for british pounds, EUR for euros, JPY for yen, RMB for chinese renminbi, ZAR for south african rand.

Would be curious to see how this compares to other hobbies, entertainment expenditures, addictive habits...

Also curious how people came up with their estimate. I'm in the $500 - $1000 range, reasoning that there are months when I'd spend $100 but plenty where I don't, so I figure under $1000. Just intrigued by how people's responses might compare to reality - ie. how (subconsciously) self deceiving are we?!

As a store owner it was explained to me like this: Games Workshop wishes to run their own stores as a way to introduce new players to the hobby. At the same time, new players, their research showed, spent an average of $600 in their first year in the hobby. GW was able to capitalize on this by teaching these new people the GW way of modeling, painting, and ultimately expanding their armies. After this educational process (and comsumption of low hanging fruit), GW would prefer that "veteran" players move on to independent hobby shops. Players in subsequent years, they found, spent an average of $300/year on their hobby. And lo and behold, look at this Dakka poll.

Last year was when I just started so I only spent about 200$. This year though, I've easily made it to the 500$ range.

I picked up the entire vallejo model color range in 2008 as well as a load of other painting and modelling stuff. I only spent about $150 maximum on models though but the hobby supplies pushed me a little bit over $1000. This year will end up being similar as I bought the entire flames of war book range as well as a small FoW force and a couple of other GW box sets.

Fascinating to see though and MadDocRox, I'll add a 'what is your monthly entertainment budget' poll or something similar in the future too.

I tallied up how much I spend last year (re-starting the Warhammer 40k addition after having stopped since 2nd Ed). I could have like.. paid off a significant amount of my student loan debt... /facepalm

I've only been playing since May this year, but i've spent +/- $200 on the hobby so far. So maybe next year you should ask again and we'll see how far i've bankrupted myself by then!

I'm in the 1000-2500 range. Adepticon was pretty expensive, as was my entire Tzeentch Demon and Black Templar armies.

Just started last year, So I spent probably $400 or so?

I already had a lot of paints from a previous foray in to LotR SBG about two years earlier. And I had a decent amount of small modeling tools as well.

Amend the poll title to read "Approximately how much money did you spend on tabletop wargaming in 2008 converted to US dollars?"

I am assuming the intent of this poll is to ask how much money you spent on tabletop (miniature) wargames (GW, PP, FoW, etc.)

Or does this include board wargames?

If it does, I voted incorrectly.

I purchased quite a few board wargames in 2008 (I can't even remember all the titles) as my primary gaming interest is in board wargames while I enjoy 40K and WotR for modeling/painting purposes [although I think WotR is probably GW's strongest ruleset for a core game.]

Building a new army go figure... dont agree with you spending less in the years after taking up the hobby.. The older you get the more disposable income you have..

i think i am up over 1,000 range... and under 2,500 for sure.

of course i went up to adepticon... so that was an entire weekend of $$$ added into the pool... i am including the hotell, food and the like in with that 1k as i spent it to go on a weekend of gaming, thats a easy 300-400 there.

then there was flatcon...

and my nid army (traded for most of it, but still bought some)

and i got into playing blood bowl, and buying (not playing yet) necromunda... sooooooo.

this year will hopefully be a few brackets lower.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Got my Reaver last year, so it skewed my hobby spending, it more than doubled it.

This tyear AT-43 firesale has also stretched my budget, even more than last year.

Normally I spend about $300 all told.

Around $100 USD.

Bugger-all, really. However, my total spending from the start of playing 40k tallies into around $15,000 USD (over 21 and a bit years) - there was a peak buying period between 1993 and 1997 where I spend around $9000.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

Geez, by far Im in one of the upper tiers. Last year it was the traveling that did it. When to chicago 2x then memphis, Vegas, was gonna go back to chi town then baltimore but didn't. Not to mention spent a lot on FG. Yeah hotels and airfare really add up.

Mine is in the upper range of $4000-$6000 mostly because I purchase a lot of vehicles and will get into a new game and buy two opposing armies.

I am pretty sure I spent $2000 on AT-43 alone
