So my one friend and I want to get into BFG to expand our 40k games thanks to the recent edition of Planetstrike. And my largest army is a Tau list so I am going to be playing a Tau fleet. What are your suggestions for such a fleet.
My concerns are:
- Fragility: Tau ships have fewer hits than either Imperial or Chaos ships.
- Weapons: Do any of their weapons count as Lance weapons like an Eldar Pulsar would.
- Speed: Most other ships are faster than any of the Tau vessels whose speed is only at 20cm. Where as only the Eldar have such low speed when facing towards the sun. But is this balance by the range of their weapons?
Benefits:
- Range: Most Tau weapons are at 45cm giving you an advantage over your opponent.
What fleets would you use to have an advantage during a battle?

Agreed, i just went for the forgeworld models, because to be honest, the original models are so ugly they make me want to smash them with a hammer !
Maneuvrability and range of weapons and the homing ordanance is a terryfying prospect for the opposition !

But has the speed ever been an issue for a tau fleet?
But with homing ordinance.. well that just changes everything. Is this in the Imperial Armoury book or another source? Because I dont think I have seen that in the rules that I have read.

Tau are a fairly simple fleet, with little more special rules that Imp or Chaos (the least complex fleets in the game)
The Tau do have built in homing ordnance, which is nice. Their ships are relatively in expensive, though the Explorer and Merchant are under armored. The Hero is an incredibly solid cruiser, and their escorts are top notch. As a bonus, you can take Demiurg and Kroot vessels to balance your weaknesses too.
Aside: I, for one, like the GW models. The forgeworld ones look too much like something out of star trek to fit the BFG aesthetic, IMO.

Start your 1500 pt fleet off with 3 Explorers and you should do fine. Thats a competetive startup.

Which models do you have? metal Games workshop ones (which look better in real life) or the Forgeworld resin models.
The GW models have their rules in Armada. Downloadable at GW site.
The FW models have rules in IA3, but download the whole list at forgeworld site.
The Armada/GW fleet should have an Explorer-Hero core.
The FW list can do good with a mix (Custodian + Wardens + 4 Protectors + Castellans or so).
The FW list is cheap to buy, the GW list $$$expensive.
The FW fleet is better under 1200pts, the GW one above.
