What would be a good set up for an assault army? I want to have a army all in Vendettas (maybe one valk per squad) with few as possible troops on the ground.

My two command HQ platoon would be fully kitted out, including all the additional chars and comminsaar, 2 powerfist upgraded, 3 meltas and a medi-pack. These would be the two hard hitting squads.

Then I'd have three command infantry platoons (kitted out again) with a carry on special weapon team. This leave 4 infantry squads in the remaining vend/valks for objective capturing and two on the ground.

I may include a priest w/ evis to fill the empty spots on the transports.

Now i don't know what to do with those two units on the ground... any ideas?

Well my suggestion would be to go for veterans with all the options available to a squad you could make a very hard hitting army especially if mounted in Valks/Vendettas but i think this would only work in planetstrike! Although a whole deep striking IG force would be hilarious, well the look on an opponents face would be!

If you're not looking to be highly competetive, then you're good to go.

Your best bet for assault-y guard (which, don't be fooled, still isn't all that good) is blobbed Infantry Platoons with Power Weapon sarges (I'm talking 50-strong) with Iron Hand Straken within 12" for the Furious Charge. Give each squad flamers for the pre-charge scorching, and a few vet squads to melta vehicles.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1

Better plan: Dont bother, its a pants army.

Good for comedy value at your FLGS when you first pull it out. Thats about it.

I collect:
Guard - 2k of mostly infantry
DA - 2k of deathwing, 2k of other bits (no vehicles)
Sisters - mostly converted/proxy because I'm waiting for therange to go plastic.
Tau - 2k with no riptides because I can.

I personally think it's a very serious discussion......for IG players!

I've written many army list's based around a hard hitting IG assault force but never really been happy with them other than over 300 Guardsmen bearing down on an opponent, and lets face it that wouldn't be fun to paint! (i'm currently painting 280+ IG figures inc tanks!)

I don't believe every army should be based around winning either, although beating an opponent is satisfying when done correctly the main aspect of our hobby is fun! i think an Assault IG force would be fun and surprising for an opponent! and the main plus point of such a force would be a gaming opponent/friend for life! which can only be a good thing, plus the modelling aspect of the force would be limitless which as a IG player i've found constricting as i've focused on size of force rather than character of the force!

I say let him go for it! and put up a project log so we can all marvel at the unique character of the force!

If we're being serious, Vets with laspistol/ccw and priests for their furious-charge-replacement thing, with straken around. The vets turn into BS 4 orks.

And/or Send In The Next Wave conscripts. They're almost as bad as gaunts without number.

I collect:
Guard - 2k of mostly infantry
DA - 2k of deathwing, 2k of other bits (no vehicles)
Sisters - mostly converted/proxy because I'm waiting for therange to go plastic.
Tau - 2k with no riptides because I can.

Hurr! Ogryn Bone 'Ead!

Seoul, South Korea

I almost always use 3 ten man squads of Ogryn (my favorite unit type). I flank them wiith heavy bolter squads (to mow down basic troops) and send in conscripts up front to slow down the enemies ranks. Then I rush the Ogryn in and they pound everything in sight. By using the Valhallan Captain, once the conscripts die down, recall them and rush them forward again. by that time the Ogryn should have pounded their way to an objective, that the concsripts can take. High points cost, maybe, the the look on your opponents face as you rush forward is priceless. IMO.

Besides, just have fun with it.

Buy Imperial War Bonds!!!
I play: 30,000+ points and growing
: 5,000+ points
: 10,000+ points
