I know that Gen-Con 2009 runs August 13-16, 2009, but, have there been any big splashes, surprises, etc. yet?

I haven't seen anything posted here yet, but that certainly doesn't mean there hasn't been some big news, right?

We do tend to trend heavily towards GW/PP after all...

So, just curious!

FFG has a video of some happenings, but I can't hear the audio track ATM.
GW IP-derived products promoted.

Yes, Mr Gelle gets that excited in real life as well.

PP's "next big thing" is a video game based on warcasters and their jacks. It's being developed by WhiteMoon Dream Studios who is a new company, but their employees have worked on Fallout and Medal of Honor. It's still in the early stages, of course.

There's a whole thread in the Warmachine forum here chock full of Retribution spoilers.

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay is coming out in a 3rd edition and looks rediculous. If you watch the afore-mentioned video, the last third of it is the brand manager reiterating that it is not a boardgame and the game plays the way he thinks it should play.

Ridiculous as in "wtf were they thinking" or "ridiculous" as in "awesome"?

EDIT: nvm, saw your post in the other thread. As I suspected, it was the "ridiculously bad" option lol

Malifaux, the game released by Wyrd miniatures, looks like a promising skirmish game.

I got knocked out in the first round of warmachine nationals (this is news, right? )

The new Warmachine books will give bonuses to "theme" armies.

Theme armies like the ones they had cards for? Are the bonuses like the ones that were on the cards? Like the Umber Guard?

A little different. The themes are tiered. At each tier you have to include x models in the army.

Each tier gives you a minor benefit.

Similar, but different.

I like the idea of Tiers.

Maybe my all pirate Cryx will get a theme. My revenants and Black Ogrun could use a boost.

OTOH I do not look forward to what a Cygnar shooty theme could do.

This sounds interesting.

Might be something GW would/should do.

That is, until all 4 Chaos Gods apparently settled their differences and play nice-nice with each other now...

Really? Fluff = Power? What an amazing concept, writing rules to service your fluff rather than sell the new model kit.

I wish a certain company the subject of which may or may not be something this board was set up to discuss would learn that lesson.

I picked up Rogue Trader, and talked to Ross about those mysterious pictures that have been making the rounds. He stated the pics did not represent any "Fantasy Flight Games products." I take this to mean that the pics are GW product. It would take some work, but you could play Battlefleet Gothic in RT if you wanted to. More intimate, character-based BFG, but BFG nonetheless.

And still the best Fallout

Don't get me wrong, love Fallout 3, but I preferred the strategy.

They are caster based. So looking at that, you might get:

For example, if you take Cygnar you might break it down this way:

Haley: Arc Nodes Theme
Nemo: Heavies and Smiths
Stryker: Storm dudes and Clads
Caine: Gun Mages
Siege: Trenchers
Kraye: Certain Jacks (not sure what all would qualify)
Darius: Heavy Warjacks and Mechanics theme

The themes listed seem to start with the limitation of not having mercs, then narrow the list
further by opening certain units FA as a reward for using that theme. Free UAs and Solos start
to appear, along with other bonuses such as starting roll, extended deployment zones, redeployment,
etc.

HBMC: Isn't GW's Space Marine chapter system technically rewarding theme? It's not quite the
same as what you're thinking, but I'm sure GW sees it that way.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
edit: A shooty Cygnar theme would involve shooty, but it would limit a player
from including certain things. So imagine that shooty army without, say, Aiyana and Holt,
or other key mercs but with an increased FA for Long Gunner UA with free UA. Or maybe
you'll be forced to include so many Long Gunners that you won't the points to field Precursor
Knights.

That sort of thing.

I probably won't build up to theme lists because I don't like painting/buying
the same units repeatedly, but it does seem fun.

Banelord Titan Princeps of Khorne

malfred wrote:Themes Themes Themes

You mean like...oh I dunno, a Theme for World Eaters, Emperor's Children, Thousand Sons, and Death Guard?

Like, where if you took a certain HQ (Like say a Chaos Lord with the mark of Khorne), it would free up additional FA (FoC slots) or limit others? So...like if you took the afforementioned Chaos Lord, then your army could only include units with the Mark of Khorne, and if you took Chaos Space Marine units with 8 members, they would get a free aspiring champion, yet suffer from an additional effect (Blood Rage)?

Man, that would be pretty awesome.

Except that was all in the associated Index Astartes and then later the Chaos 3.5 dex, and GW took it all out of the newer codicies.

Really, there used to be "tiers/themes" for every 40k army. Really!

Craftworld Eldar - Iyanden, Alaitoc, Biel-tan, Ulthwe, Saim Hann, and then later the Ulthwe Strike Force
Dark Eldar - Wych Cult
Imperial Guard - Catachans, Cadians, Mordians, Death Korps, Valhallans, Tallarn, etc
Chaos - Alpha Legion, Word Bearers, Iron Warriors, Night Lords, Black Legion, World Eaters, Emperor's Children, Thousand Sons, Death Guard
Orks - Blood Axes, Death Skulls, Bad Moons, Evil Suns, Goffs, Snakebites
Space Marines - (admittedly the way the new space marine characters work retains a tad bit about theme)

Anyway, so yea Malfred, I agree that 40k could use tiers and themes.

You can still judge people arbitrarily for not doing so as well.

On Topic:

I'm excited to hear about the use of theme's in roster development for war machine. Hopefully this kind of thing will flow on into Hordes as well? Was this inferred?
