I really want to start a Marienburg Warband, but was perturbed by the fact that GW don't seem to sell a warband kit for Human Mercenares. While searching, I found that a related product was the Empire Milita from WHFB, am I supposed to use this kit as a warband instead?

Yeh thats the general idea, I actually just started a marienburg warband a few weeks ago. Its a great box you get pretty much all the weapon options in the militia. I ordered a marienburger captain though, just to make him stand out from the rest of the guys, there's like five marienburger models from gw, but you can pretty much make all of them out of the militia bits for a lot less.

Another Fantasy box set that would be good for building Marienburgers is the Empire State Troops box. More "poofy" pants and sleeves and you're getting shields and extra bits. I think a combination of the two boxes should be sufficient to build a good variety of Mercs.

Yeah, with getting both boxes I would be getting concerned at the number of unecessary Models, but maybe just the militia would mean getting some variation of parts and more "hardcore Treasure seekin' " attitude clothing!

There's no such thing as an "unnecessary model". IMHO at least.

Funny story: the Empire Militia box is actually a double size version of the Human Mercenaries box from Mordheim.

So, yes, you ARE supposed to use that kit because it IS the Mercenary kit brought into WHFB because GW decided to do something new when they stopped supporting Mordheim.

Incidentally, the Skaven Night Runners box is the same situation regarding the Mordheim Skaven Warband.
