I got my PC at work upgraded so it can probably handle DoW.

I want the version with Necrons and Tau. Is that a standalone game or do I need to buy something else first and install it as an expansion pack?

I've looked up this query on Amazon and THQ's Dawn of War site but there is nothing to confirm the issue either way.

Get DOW / dark crusade .
Includes DOW 1 and DOW1 /winter assault multiplayer maps and is less incompatible to older OS/hardware.
Standalone game.
Possible to install it alongside the other DOW parts without trouble. But unneeded.

Should be available cheaply( estimated 10€ ) since DOW 1 / soulstorm and DOW 2 are also available.

If you have Steam on your work PC, Kilkrazy, you can get Dawn of War gold Edition, which comes with Winter Assault and Dawn of War--along with Dark Crusade, for something like $30.

The only downside is you'd have to leave it on for awhile to download them.

Soulstorm's standalone IIRC. However I think you have to have the other expansions/core game to use ALL the races in multiplayer, feel free to correct me here.

All the expansions are standalones.

They just require the previous copies to use the races from each in multiplayer.

Just buy a CD, steam takes a lifetime and a half to do anything.

Soulstorm is a mixxed bag. You get the Dark Eldar and Sisters but a lot of fans were not happy with the changes and tweaks. Dark Crusade seems to be considered the most balanced and overall well designed. I agree that if you have to pick one , get the Gold Edition like Kanluwen suggests.

I liked playing a 3vs3 QS game as DE along with two other DE players vs whatever. Soulstorm x3 FTW!!

"DOW/winter assault" is an expansion and needs DOW 1.
DOW 1, DOW/dark crusade and DOW/soulstorm could be used as standalone.

Oh that is right, Gold is just DoW + Winter Assualt isn't it? Platinum is the one to get.

I have all the expansions and still play this. Good game.

I like the Soulstorm changes, I'm sure they brought Necrons down a peg or two.

I actually lost my discs for Winter Assault, Dark Crusade, and Dawn of War itself...but just nabbed it off Steam the other night.
