are those studs implanted through the skin and into the skull? If it is the SM advanced immunity must be good enough to prevent infection

They are service studs each one showing 50 years [i think] of service to the Emperor.

If that is the case then Dante(1100 years old)has 22 studs on his forehead.

Not all chapters use the studs however, Dante would consider his forehead far too pretty to ruin :p

Master Llyons is correct, it is one gold stud for every 50 years service, but as people have said, once you get into 1000's of years service and your face starts to look like a Pepperoni Pizaa, then it may be excusable for you to stop adding studs, unless you like that look of course.

The only marines who I know use the studs are Ultramarines and their Babies, and since for them 400 Years is like, well old and ancient and close to deaths door, as opposed to Space Wolves, where 700 years is not even oldest Wolf Lord or the Blood Angels, where Dante has been Chapter Master longer than most marines even live, I doubt Pepperoni Pizza Face Syndrome is an issue
