Just thought I'd continue my psychological profiling of a typical wargamer and as I am in a very good mood right now, I thought I'd see how everyone else is doing.

Usual level of happyness:
- done with work and move on to hobby = High
- not done with hobby but need to go to work = very low
- encountering some questionable personalities at forums = deeper than the galaxy central black hole
- encountering some reasonable hobbyists IRL or "virtually" = fairly happy
- general happyness level at day / night = medium
I think this sums it up.

I voted "other," as I'm doing relatively well (all things considered, *knock on wood*) without medication (formerly on Zoloft, an SSRI, or selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor - it basically keeps the happy-chems in the brain longer by limiting their re-absorption, as the name suggests), currently, but I have been previously diagnosed with dysthymia, a chronic low- (especially) to mid-level depression, with an increased likelihood of major depressive episodes. And yes, I definitely COULD have made that sentence more convoluted. It's a gift. Regardless, in hindsight, I could easily have voted for the "depressed" option. Figured I'd take the cheerier and more educational approach (take that, depression!)
To quote Google Health, for the casually curious [with my own experiential addendums]:
Dysthymia is a chronic type of depression in which a person's moods are regularly low. However, it is not as extreme as other types of depression... The main symptom of dysthymia is low, dark, or sad mood nearly every day for at least 2 years. The symptoms are less severe than in patients with major depression, but people with this condition can still struggle with:
* Feelings of hopelessness
* Insomnia or hypersomnia [hence my atrocious sleep schedule]
* Low energy or fatigue [gets in the way of work, school and hobbies]
* Low self-esteem [I dodged this one by being so awesome, in all respects, that I can't ignore myself ]
* Poor appetite or overeating [I usually manage one decent meal a day]
* Poor concentration [with occasional bouts of hyper-focus, which usually focus on enjoyable activities, to the exclusion of other responsibilities]
[* They forgot to mention the generally poor health that frequently accompanies the condition, with which I am all too acquainted]

Well, my usual state is right around peachy, but it can get just plain negative when I go into emotional overload, which happens very rarely. Otherwise, I'm perfectly cheery.

I went with "Fairly Happy". When I lived in Canuckistan I would've went with Clinically depressed or unhappy. Physically removing myself from the "box" and moving to new digs re-widen a prespective that I lost when I was younger has improved my mental and physical health by leaps and bounds.
Back in North America, the garbage food, the nuclear winters, the gakky traffic, and the common vibe of unpleasant selfishness that has permeated society from ages 5 and up can really screw with your noodle. Here, I commute 10 mins by murdercycle to work. The Pacific is 200 yards from my house. I'm home everyday by 4 pm. There is a free gym. Sea Turtles, Wild Pigs, monkeys, hot chicks, beer vending machines...Too many pluses to count. But that is countryside Japan. Urban Japan is one of the most F'ed up stress inducing enviroment on the planet where there aren't bullets flying or dudes blowing themselves up.
If you don't like what you have, YOU have to change it. Worked for me.

I'm on a much more even path than I was when I was younger, when I was angry nearly all the time. I eventually worked the anger out of my system, now it takes much more to piss me off. Not that I don't want Gav Thorpe's head on a platter, but that's a whole different story.

I'm doing great! I'm not working a high-paying job, but it covers my basic expenses with a little wiggle room to go to the movies or buy a new unit every month or so. I spend as much time as I can with good friends and the girl I love and I enjoy my hobbies.
I could be richer, I could have more free time. I could work with more competent people, I could weigh what I did when I left Japan, and I could be more productive. But I'm really happy with what I have now. I voted "very happy", because I really have no reason not to be. I mean my car just broke down, but hey it's just a vehicle right? Got money saved up, gonna get a new one, life goes on.
Also, amen to Kornholio for living it up in Japan. It's such an amazing place to live, it really makes me resent America sometimes when I compare the two. But hey, could always be worse. For the record though Kornholio, living right outside urban Japan in suburban Japan was pretty darn nice too. I couldn't go see sea turtles when I wanted, but I had a Starbucks nearby when I wanted to bring my army books and spend 6 hours just playing with ideas for different lists or reading a novel!

In fact, about the happiest that I've been in the last three years. Finishing law school, getting back into the Warhams, getting engaged (this Thursday), and--yes--hanging out on Dakka (you guys are awesome) definitely have a lot to do with it.

Honestly, it depends on if I take my meds or not.
I was about to hit option A, but then I was considering that since I was put on my current medications, I've been 'fairly happy' overall.
So, even though it's a boring option that has no visible effect on what people think of the poll, 'other'.

I went with unhappy. I'm working the overnight shift at a job I've come to hate, with partners I can't stand, with people who treat me like crap and all for a crappy salary. Oh, and we're short staffed, so there's a crap load of overtime, which helps the money department but hurts the sleep one. Then I've added school back into the mix, which is every other weekend for eight hours a day with online portions and additional class added in on top of that. As my day is pretty much work, gym, sleep with class added in, I have no time to see any of my friends or do much in the way of relaxing. This has been going on since April or so, and won't be over till February.
While the end result will improve my situation dramatically, getting there is a pain in the ass that is pretty much sucking the soul out of me at the moment.

I put 'fairly happy' but mostly because 'tired & lonely' wasn't up there, and I do at least try to be a chipper guy when possible ... Grad school and not letting myself sleep help for that first one, and for the second, well, can a dreadnought get a little loving? Come on ladies, the actuated armor plating does come off
But congrats to you Manchu, good luck with all.
