Hey I'm really into the skirmish games (thier really convenient for us guys that got loads of stuff to do besides painting a billion models) and I was looking at this Malifaux. Looks like alot fun with people playing gangs of gunslingers, steampunk wizkids, zombie monsters, and otherwordly creatures. It also has a hard mechanic that makes it play like poker but with miniatures. Well I love poker and I love miniatures so this looks like a sure bet. Has anyone else played this game and if you have what are your thoughts. (If you haven't played this game please don't reply since I'm not really concerned about hunches on a product I potentially plan on buying)

I got to play it recently at a minicon called Legends in the Fall at Trinity College. Near Chicago.
It impressed me enough to get me to buy the rules that day.
I liked the card mechanic.
It doesn't feel like Poker, but it doesn't feel like dice either.
Its more like, if you really need to pull something off, you save a high card for it and you are guaranteed to do it.
You still have the autofail of the Black Joker, but the odds are lower than double ones on dice and nonexistant if it has been played.
I like the way Fate can alter the chances.
Also with so many abilities to use, choosing which to use and when is very interesting.
Gameplay reminds me of if you were to play Warmachine using only Solos. Each model plays differently.
With the amount of abilities, I don't see many people using much more than the starter boxes plus one or two.
At least in the early going.
My own goal right now is to pick up the Viktorias box and then a couple Ronin when they are released.
The Background is pretty creative, considering they had to create a framework for a bunch of existing models.
I think they have accomplished this quite well.
If you have the time, you should check out the Malifaux forums. They seem active, and there are previews of upcoming stuff to be found.

I really like it.
The comparison to warmachine with solos is pretty good. Each model has lots of interesting individual abilities.
The card mechanic is very good, better than I expected. It is quite different from dice, ie, it's not like a 13 sized dice.
I've already got every model in the Neverborn faction painted, which despite the fact that's only about 15 models, is still shocking for me.
They're really beautiful models.

I've got all the guild models, still painting them up at the mo. But Malifaux has reinvigorated my love of gaming, it was all getting a bit stale just playing fantasy and 40k then along comes a great little skirmish game that uses cards.
I highly recommend getting into it, the games are so much fun, and the card mechanic doesn't take very long to pick up at all.
Oh, and the minis are great looking too (well most of them are)
Also the wyrd forums are a good bunch of people, it's pretty laid back over there. It's also good having a direct line to the creators, as they post quite often and chime in pretty quickly if any issues come up with the rules.

Good glad i spotted this. Malifaux has been in my possible buys for a while the card mechanic seals the deal.

You should be able to get into the game for under $100 (US). rulebook (35), starter box (28-35), maybe two or three blisters (15-30).
The models are very nice, but a couple are a pain in the tuckus to put together. Who would have guessed a hand holding a scissors could be so difficult to put in place.
take care

I just started looking into this and love the figures and the sheer creativity to come up with a game to incorporate all of their existing figures is pure genius.
How balanced do you guys think the game is? The card mechanic sounds like it naturally balances things and becomes a contest of denying your opponent's actions (which sounds hilariously fun!).
The Warstore has a decent review of the game posted and supposedly some of the Arcanists groups have a steeper learning curve. If I do get into the game I plan on playing Cult of December and Miners and Steamfitters Union.
Here's the review on the Warstore site.

I've played 5-6 games so far with my Seamus crew, I also the December Crew, Nicodemus's crew and one of the guild crews...I think Lady J.
Anyhow. Really like the game alot. Moves quick once you get the card mechanic down.
There is alot of things going on for so few models, triggers, stat mods, and other little details that I really like.
I think if we played more it would scratch the itch I've had since Rackham killed Con 3.x. Right now our group is into a 40k buildup Malifaux is tabled but I definitely see it making a reappearance once the buildup is over.
