Dominion Day was a one day, ranking tournament for the European Team Championship hosted by
The Northern Wasters gaming club in Ballymena. Snow and ice prevented several players from
attending and some suspected that Njal Stormcaller was to blame for blizzard that waylaid
the triple vendetta list and Mech. Seer council. Eighteen players were able
to make it to the venue--the Michelin Athletic Club (it should be noted that the bar opened
promptly at 1:00 p.m. and on my life you have have approached geek paradise when you are holding
a creamy pint in one hand and a fistfull of dice in the other looking out over your army on
a tournament table). Despite the small numbers as a ranking tournament there were several
top builds present. There was no comp. or soft scoring--as it should be. A win was worth
15 points with up to 5 bonus points contingent on VP differential (tabling got you 20 points).
A draw was worth 10 points and a loss was worth 5 points except if you were tabled and then
you received no points.

I brought Angus' Glory Stompas (cut and pasted from army builder)

GAME 1

My first game was against a Space Wolves player. The mission was seize ground with five objectives
and the deployment was Dawn of War. I've only played space wolves once before but I clearly
this list was not min/maxed for cruelty. With only two troop choices he was already up against
the wall.

My opponent's list:

1750 Pts - Space Wolves Roster -

1 Njal Stormcaller - 245
1 Wolf Lord in Power Armour; Frost Weapon; Plasma Pistol; Saga of the Beastslayer - 150

1 Land Raider Redeemer;Multi-Melta - 250
1 Land Raider; Multi-Melta - 260

Total Roster Cost: 1749

Turn 1
I went first and drove everything up the middle 13". The deff koptas were in reserve.

The space wolves placed the scouts in reserve and drove on with his two Land Raiders. Shooting
was inconsequential.

Turn 2
The battle wagons drove 13" forward--the nobz wagon and two others heading for Njal's LR and
one other wagon heading for the wolf lord's LR.

The scouts came on to the ork table edge and fired at the rear armor of the wagons. The KFF
earned its points and every wagon survived.

Turn 3
My koptas came on from reserve and I moved them on next to the scouts. The wagon heading for
the wolf lord's LR did an about face, moved 13" and deployed 19 boyz and a nob to hit the scouts.
My three remaining wagons headed for Njal's LR then used boarding planks to destroy the melta and
stun it. Furthermore three grabbing klaws prepared to hold it in place for a more proper peeling
apart next turn. The koptas and boyz charged and wiped the scouts and the wolf lord's LR drove towards
that combat but was too far away to do anything but lament the loss of progenoids.

Njal decided he should get out of the land raider. Given that the LR was held in place and about
to have all of its access points blocked he really had no choice. Space Wolf shooting exploded
one wagon and then Njal and his grey hunters charged and eliminated the boyz it was carrying.

Turn 4
The denouement. The nobz charge Njal and his pack and wipe them. The warboss goes alone and
wails on Njal's LR immmobilizing it. My remaining full wagon heads over towards the wolf lord's
LR.

The wolf lord's LR wrecks the approaching battlewagon and then charge the 20 boyz. The wolf lord
heads towards the boyz squad that had killed the scouts. He's hoping to draw them off the
objective with the lord.

Turn 5
The nobz head toward the last grey hunter squad. They are holding an objective as well with
their tail end.

The wolf lord charges bravely into the boyz squad and dies a heroic death and the game ends with
the orks holding 2 objectives and the space wolves holding one objective. Turn six would have been
good for me but I take the win happily and go get a refreshing barley pop.

GAME 2

The mission capture and control, the deployment seize ground. I'm up against a veteran tournament
player using a so-called ninja tau list.

The Tau player goes first and reserves most everything. He starts his sky rays on the table and
his HQ guys in addition to the two units of pathfinders. I start everything on the table. And
turbo-boost the koptas to get close to a sky ray. I fail to seize initiative and the game
commences.

Turn 1
Horrific shooting by the Tau and great rolling by my KFF results in nothing more than a
destroyed big shoota on a battle wagon. I move out towards the Tau objective which is in the
back left corner of the table. The koptas fail to do any damage to a sky ray.

Turn 2
The piranhas come on for the Tau. More terrible shooting from the Tau and great rolling for
the KFF (the Tau player couldn't get a break. He'd eliminate the KFF cover save on the nob
wagon and then fail to hit or penetrate with rail guns and then the KFF would save shooting
against the other battle wagons).

My nobz wagon and one other wagon drive up to the piranhas and boarding plank assault but
roll extremely poorly and only manage to shake them. At least I'll have two grabbin klaw attempts
on his turn. A wagon moves up and drops boyz out to charge a unit of path finders and the koptas
go in to help. Obviously the path finders die and the boyz consolidate towards his objective.
I dispatch my fourth battle wagon on a desperate ram attack againts a sky ray and thanks to the
red paint it has the range. Continuing his run of horrible luck the Tau player fails to dodge
the ram and I roll a pentetrate and then an explode result.

Turn 3
The Tau player deepstrikes crisis suits behind a battle wagon which they promptly destroy. Boyz get
out and prepare to charge. I roll successfully with the klaws and the piranhas stay put. The
broadsides destroy the nobz' wagon so they're on foot now but looking forward to charging
the piranhas.

On my turn the nobz and boss wipe the skimmers taking a few stings from the flechette launchers while
a squad of boyz charges the crisis suits. I win that combat but the suits hold. My remaining
wagon with boyz drives straight at the broadsides and I turbo-boost my koptas toward the
broadsides. So on his turn he has to choose to shoot the nobz or the looming wagon and koptas.

Turn 4
The Tau player rolls for his remaining reserves and gets everything. He comes on at his objective.
The tau player has to take out the koptas and the full wagon. He uses the sky ray to kill the koptas
and his broadsides only manage to immobilize the full wagon. The crisis suit combat is a draw! A squad
of kroot and skimmer shooting destroy the boyz mob that was holding his objective.

On my turn the boyz get out of the immobilized wagon and thanks to a very good Waagh! they are
going to get the charge on the broadsides. My nobz and boss run towards the Tau objective and
I finally manage to kill the crisis suits. Those boyz consolidate on top of my objective. The combat
witht the broadsides is basically a push.

Turn 5

A grabbin klaw prevents one skimmer from moving but the remaing sky ray moves towards my objective. It is
still too far away to contest however. On my turn I drive a battlewagon to contest his objective and run
my nobz and warboss in that direction. The game ends--I hold one objective and am contesting
his. The turn five end was a good thing for me because he would most likely got a draw on T6.

GAME 3

Against someone from my own gaming club! For glassware!

The mission: kill points, the deployment, seize ground.

After another trip to the bar for a beer the game starts. I get the first turn. Thank goodness for spearhead and for
getting the first turn. He reseverved his prince, sorcerer and bikes, the five man squad.

Turn 1
The wagons drive forwards and the koptas immobilize a rhino--not bad.
On the CSM turn the nob wagon survives shooting from the two vindicators and the oblits--so far so good! A CSM squad
disembarked from the rhino and the koptas actually survive shooting and assaults.

Turn 2
The nobz and a boyz squad get up close to the vindicators and get out to charge. Another squad of boyz disembarks and
charge the CSM engaged with the remaining kopta. Both vindicators are wrecked and the orks win but do not wipe the CSM
squad.

The CSM does not get the Greater Demon in from reserves but the demon prince and the bikes and sorcerer come on along with
the five man squad. The sorcerer lashes a squad of boyz through the wrecked vindicators and shooting from the bikes killed most
of the rest. The remaining four boyz flee. On the upside, with a decent waagh the nobz will be in charge range of the
sorcerer. The demon prince and the five man squad fail to kill a battle wagon.

Turn 3
The nobz charge and wipe the sorcerer. I break off the big mek and he hopes in a battlewagon which drives away and hopes
to survive. The kopta/CSM/boyz combat continues with the marines losing but not wiped. A full squad of boyz gets the charge
on the demon prince and the five man squad. The prince takes two wounds and most of the marines die.

The greater demon failed to show again! The oblits destroyed a wagon. The prince/CSM/boyz squad is a push but the other
boyz squad managed to finish off its squad.

Turn 4
A wagon rams and explodes a rhino, while the nobz pile into the prince/CSM/boyz assault. The prince and remaining marine
or two die and the nobz and boyz consolidate towards terrain. Poor consolidation roles have left the kopta and a boyz squad
in range of the last remaining CSM squad.

The greater demon shows up but he's a non factor at this point. The CSM squad gets out and shoots the hell out of a
boyz squad and then charges and wipes the kopta and the remaining few boyz.

Turn 5
Everything I have left drives away or runs for cover. The oblits manage to kill the wagon the big mek is in and then kill
the big mek. Damn I should I have just kept him with the nobz. If the game ends now I win 8 to 7 KP. The game continues.

Turn 6
I try to hide my last remaining wagon, boyz squad, and nobz. The oblit with los gets a lucky shot and pops the remaining
battle wagon. The game ends in a draw.

I end the tournament with two wins and a draw. That puts me in second place with 41 victory points, 1 point ahead of the CSM
player who takes third, and nine points behind the winner--a triple excorcist sisters list.

Great battle reports and interesting read. I wish they served beverages stateside at tournament events! As a SoB player that is great to see. Do you recall at all the list the SoB playr used? I am guessing 3x Exorcist with Immolator spam, but it would be interesting to see.

From the way your last game was going it seemed like you were going to smash the CSM player (taking down both lashes and 2x Vindicator so early). What would you have done differently or is it up to the dice gods at that point?

What would I have done differently:
1. The big mek would have stayed in the nobz/boss squad. That's one KP saved and the game won. And yet it turns out that even if I had won my third game I would still taken second place, five points behind the winner.

Are you sure about that sisters list? Seems a bit light for 1750 points.

Canonness and lord (without tons of gear) are maybe 200, Callidus is 130 or so. Sisters are 190 ea, ST 95, Dominion maybe 200, Exorcist x3 405. Granted this is all off the top of my head, but that's only 1200 points or so.

That's probably why I can't figure out how it won. (Unless that guy was a darn good general).

Something is definitely missing. The list you PM'd me adds up to 1534.

I'm thinking he's at least missing a ride for the ISTs.

Or he is truly badass because he won with a 200 point disadvantage.

(As a trivia point, one more BS Squad would bring 1534 to exactly 1750.)

Great battles. Dual-lash is tough, esp. if you have no defense for it. Combined with all the blasts he had...wheww. BTW, the sisters list is wrong because his Inq is illegal. If it was a Lord, he must have a retinue of at least 3. Otherwise, it's just an elite Inquisitor.

The Lord comes with a 3+ save so he probably did not have Carapace Armor on. I am betting with that loadout he also just sat in a Chimera using Scourging and hooding things.

That list now makes a lot more sense though, I ran something similar the other day but with a shooty inquisitor Retinue against some 'nids. Between psychic test, hood, shield of faith, to hit, to wound and cover saves he only managed to kill 4 battle sisters with a stray warp blast with all 3 Zoathropes.

On a related note, they boys really don't have any sort of psychic defense in their entire codex, right?

Congrats, Olympia! And thanks for the report! At non-comped events I usually run dual lash (or lash sorc + warp time prince) as well, and Battlewagons are one of those lists I always shudder to face.

calypso2ts wrote:I wish they served beverages stateside at tournament events!

They sometimes do!

The issue is that most small local events are held at gaming stores (which generally can’t have alcohol on the premises, unless it’s after hours and kids are kept out), and most big events held at hotels, which often don’t allow drinking in the main room. That said, some hotels DO allow it (the one Adepticon is held at, for example- they just ask you to buy drinks at the hotel, not bring outside ones). And if you run an event at a local fraternal order or social club (like the Eagles, or the Moose, or such) they often not only allow alcohol, but actually have a bar right on site! I’ve attended a few events at halls like these.

And yes, I do quite enjoy a day spent with a tournament army in front of me and a beer in my hand.
