Check your credit card statement carefully if you registered for Adepticon in the last week or so. Their registration cart was hacked somehow. I actually had to cancel my credit card on Monday and order a new one. A representative from Adepticon was nice enough to email me and even call me to let me know what happened, but the whole situation was still very irritating... :(

Ouch. Sorry to hear that!

(Strange to think that I am actually safer by having used Paypal; that's not the usual order of things.)

Huh?

PayPal is usually a very safe way to pay... What have you experienced and/or heard that makes you say otherwise?

Its my understanding that the hacker somehow misdirected the cart away from paypal and grabbed the credit card info. I don't know all the particulars though...

I suffered from this too, had to order a replacement for my credit card.

Essentially, the website Adepticon had would automatically direct you through a Paypal cart to pay for your registration.

What the hacker did was switched that to a cart of his/her own, so as you where going through the process of paying for your registration, you though everything was fine, but you where really giving your card information to somebody else.

Adepticon waives my badge fee for the hassle, and I had a very nice conversation with Hank from Adepticon. They are really being stand up guys through this whole ordeal.

We have taken the steps needed to notify those affected. Orders placed since March 4th maybe effected and only if you used the offline Credit Card option which amounted to less than 40 transactions. This option was enabled by the attacker and no information was compromised on paypal orders.

AdeptiCon staff have been personally calling individuals affected today to explain the issue and have appreciated the understanding and patience. It certainly has been an inconvenience to all of us.

With the cart already scheduled to close on March 20th AdeptiCon staff made the decision in light of this breach to close the webcart early. Remaining event tickets will be available to purchase onsite.

AdeptICon 2010 is going to be one heck of a time .. see everyone in a few weeks.
