I am interested in fielding armies, rather than small skirmish games with key characters. Thinking elves or Rohan vs. Orcs. Is (was) there a starter set that lends itself to that end? Been playing the computer version of Lord of the Rings Battle for Middle Earth lately and it has piqued my interest.....

Not yet, but I expect a starter set for War of The Ring is planned for the future. You may want to ask the Rumours forum about this.
If you're more interested in armies, don't buy the Mines of Moria set, as it is based around the Lord of The Rings stratagy battle game, which is something distict from WoTR.
If you want big battles with LotR armies, then War of The Ring will definately be for you, as it's less skirmishy than the SBG. You'll need the Rulebook for WoTR, and I believe that GW will be bringing out WoTR army sets in the near future.

Is there anything by way of 10MM? GW had Battle of the Five Armies, are there any supplements or just the core Specialist game? Are there other companies with 10-15MM figures? I did a google and came up a bit sparse for results...

If there is, I haven't heard of any. It is possible that they will bring out more supplements along a similar line, but I don't think they have anything apart from Bot5A.

I have been looking at getting into LotR as well but have been discouraged by WH Fantasy players because the rules "aren't as interesting", "don't have as much strategy as WH", or are "easier and not as challenging as WH". Is this entirely true? Are there good examples of comparisons I can read online that addresses these comments? I'd really love to build a LotR army. Thanks!

I've heard that WOTR has plenty of complexity - but it is a different game from WHF. One interesting difference is Priority. Just because you started first last turn does NOT mean this will happen again the next turn. It really changes the way the game is played.
The best way to get started is to find others who play, or failing that, finding one person who will buy some models with you and try it out.
Have fun!

That's my initial thought on it as well. Just try to find others and play. I've read the rulebooks for both (and played a couple of WH games) but still can't get a good feel for the differences without playing. I just need to find some local gamers that will give it a go.

I was happy to discover (realize?) that I was a bit wrong about the differences of the WH vs. LotR rules. I read through the rulebook again this morning and, after playing some WH games since the first time I read it, can now see just how different it is. I found myself realllly liking the rules and wishing there were more people in the area (read: any) that play.
My last visit to my local GW store found me talking with the employees there and being told that LotR just isn't nearly as popular as the other two and thus much more difficult to find players. What to do?
