So last night I went out to my local GW to play a game against one of the other regulars. When we get there both of thier gaming tables were in use for league games, so we had to wait for a game to finish. When a table freed up we had enough time to play a 500point game. My Space Marines(only my second time playing them, usually play my Orks) against his Guard. Niether of us told the other what we were including in our army until deployment. We decided to play an objective game, and had two objectives; one in a building In the Center Left of the table, right on the edge, the other was in ruins just to the right of table center. We played on a 4x4 table.
My army list was:
Captain /w Powersword
10 Man Tac squad, w/ Missile Launcher and Flamer(seperated into combat squads)
7 man Tac squad all bolters
Whirlwind
His army list
Command squad with Lascannon
Veteran Squad /w Autocannon
Veteran Squad /w Autocannon
Lemen Russ, I forget what weapons he had on the tank
My opponent won the roll for deployment, so he deployed first. Each Veteran squad 12 inches away from an objective, his command squad in the back corner, and his Lemen Russ was about equal distance form both objectives.
For my deployment, the 7 man squad was 12 inches from the building, the Captain was deployed with the flamer and sargent for the combat squad 12 inches from the ruins that house the other objective. The Whirlwind was hugging my table edge, and my remaining marines(with the missile launcher) was in cover in the middle of my deployment zone.
I then attempted to seize the initiative, and rolled a 6, which was the beginning of my good luck.
Turn 1:
My Turn: Moved the seven man towards the building, and ran instead of shooting to get into the building for cover and to capture the objective. Moved my combat squad with the captain towards the ruins, and ran to the edge. My missile launcher fired at his tank, and I failed my to hit roll. The last action of my turn was to fire my whirlwind at his command squad, which unfortunately scattered four inches towards me. I only caused one wound, which he failed his save.
His Turn: Moved one veteran squad towards the ruins, but did not have line of sight on any of my units. He fired his lascannon at my whirlwind, and made it explode. He then fired his tank at my Marines with the missile launcher, and caused one unsaved wound, killing one marine. Didn't do anything with his other veteran squad.
Turn 2:
My Turn: I moved my seven man into the building and fired at the closer of his veteran squads, causing one unsaved wound. My combat squad moved into the ruins, and rolled two sixes for my difficult terrain rolls. I then fired my missile launcher on his tank, rolled a 6 to hit, 6 to glance(AV14), and rolled a 6 to wreck his tank. THREE SIXES IN A ROW!
His Turn: Fired at my 7 man squad, killing two marines which caused them to fall back. Had no other shots that turn.
Turn 3:
My Turn: My now 5(down from seven) man squad automatically regrouped and ran back into the building. Started moving my missile launcher towards the objective, and they forwent their shooting to run. Fired my flamer at his veteran squad for 5 hits, but he made all five saves. I then assaulted and caused one wound, he did the same.
His turn: He didn't have line of sight on anyone, so we continued the assault from the turn before, I caused one wound, but he passed his leadership.
Turn 4:
My Turn: Claimed the objected in the building with my diminished seven man, and then fired upon one veteran squad, causing some wounds, but they did not fall back. Continued moving my missile launcher combat squad to the ruins. did not have line of sight, so no shots fired. Finished the assault, in which his squad broke and ran away, caused enough wounds to bring his squad down to three men.
His Turn, fired at my squad in the building, no wounds, no other shots available. His other squad failed to regroup.
It was at this point that we had to end the game and pack up, as the store was closing up in 10 minutes. This was one of the most enjoyable games that I have played so far, not because I won by controlling both objectives, but because of the good rolling we both did. My opponent made more saves then he failed. This was my third game against this opponent, in which I have lost two games, and won once. I would definitely play him again. Every game is a pleasure, and every time we have an uncertainty on something we settle it peacefully, or ask for an outside opinion.
