Wow...that's one nasty battle. And to think that the DE army isn't even optimized yet. Then again, the angels could improved upon as well. Well, you learn as you play and I'm sure the next time you play against DE, you'll do better even with the same list.

Oh, you're absolutely right, though that 1850 list I ran was sort of a themed 3rd Company list, and isn't supposed to be entirely competitive.
I have some nasty lists up my sleeve, and I might just break them out over the holidays and have a re-match.

While the BA list was far from optimized, the BA player also made plenty of mistakes. The weak advance that just asked for getting eaten up piece by piece, some target priorty (shooting at a raider when Incubi is about to eat you) and a generally poor battle plan probably didn't help either
I'm impressed by the 7 pain tokens and triggered Soul Trap on the Archon.
I think that BA might be a match-up for DE where the Huskblade/Soultrap combo might be worth it since there are quite often a larger number of relatively squishy IC's out there to give the opportunity to make use of that item.

Agreed, Nids and BA (maybe SW? ICs are far less squishy though) are where the huskblade/soultrap shines. Guard are where you see exactly why it's not so hot.

Nice battle report seemed like fun, my only comments are about the video. I don't do videos so you can disregard this if you want, but it might be better to take pictures of the game, and comment on them when your doing the video, which will get rid of the shaky camera and background noise. Hope to see more!

Thanks for the comment, but yeah I've had a lot of people request video batreps in detail like I've done this one. I did start off with pictures+commentary but people didn't like that format.

Plenty of armies have squishy ICs actually, the Huskblade/Soul Trap combo works well against any character not designed to be in combat, particularly anything without or with a bad invulnerable save. HQs like this are actually more common than combat characters in many armies as its the cheaper option, it gives you more room to fit in other stuff. Marine Librarians, Rune Priests, Big Meks, Chaos Sorcerers, any Tau or Eldar character and to a lesser extent any WH characters (they can get a good invulnerable but are so totally outclassed in combat it probably won't make a difference) are all very common choices atm and all very good targets for that Archon build. BA are the best matchup you are going to come across due to the ever present Priests, they are probably the only army you will get to S10 with. I don't think its that good against Nids though, admittedly the ID is nice against a big chunk of the army, but there is the small snag that you actually have to be able to wound in the first place. Until you kill a Tyrant or Prime you need 6's (and have to avoid being squashed by the S6 attacks in return) but after that you should run rampant. You will still have major problems against the smaller bugs though, mass attacks will easily drop the Shadowfield and kill you. Even against characters you can't ID, as long as they can't ID you back the Archon should do pretty well thanks to the Shadowfield.
I wouldn't be too worried about not being able to ID Guard characters though as the Archon (and pretty much anything else in the DE army) should be able to smash Guard in combat anyway.
As soon as the Incubi got that first turn charge it was all over, I immediately thought 'tabled in 4' as soon as I saw that happen, too many points gone for no return and mega buffed Incubi = pain. Admittedly that could have backfired pretty badly if the Land Raider didn't die, but DE are probably the best in the business at killing them so not that unexpected. Land Raiders are probably going to see less and less use with Dark Eldar starting to show up more and hammer units, particularly ones which use Land Raider are going to get smashed by DE. The Incubi could have probably gotten a multi charge on both the squads in the ruins as well actually, that would have gone their way as well (perhaps not in a single round, but that just means they avoid being shot).

The reason I mentioned BA specifically is because of the preponderance of relatively easy to kill IC's in the form of Sanguinary Priests.
Just about every other army has at least one IC available to it. Only a small handful of armies will have more than one or two IC's at any given time, and some of those armies have very tough IC's (like Space Wolves). This limits the opportunity that the Archon has to make use of his Soultrap; that's the only question I have about fielding that combination of equipment in an all-comers list.
Personally, I'm a fan of the Huskblade/Soultrap combination, but over the course of many games, the actual percentage of times that this combo will hit are going to be pretty small. It all hinges on getting into that IC vs IC combat where the DE Archon lands the killing blow. If an opponent knows you have that equipment set, they're probably going to try to avoid such a confrontation, one way or another. While that modification of your opponent's battle plan has a certain tactical value of its own, I would not make plans around having your Archon getting S6.

Overall, I'm finding that DE actually have a somewhat favorable matchup against BA, which I truly didn't expect. Quick note (that has no effect on the game whatsoever) DE units do NOT gain pain tokens after they get 3. That would be ridiculous with Share the Pain lol.
Also, I'm impressed by the amount of DL work your opponent got done with only one Ravager. I see most DE lists using 3 of them as a staple, so being able to fully demech was very good in his favor.
Overall, liked the report, hope to see more

Not true vishra...I'm fairly certain it says 3+ gives FNP, FC and Fearless; having more than 3 in a single unit offers no other benefits. Codex is in the car and too lazy to go get it but im fairly positive you can have more than 3.
--The whole concept of government granted and government regulated 'permits' and the accompanying government mandate for government approved firearms 'training' prior to being blessed by government with the privilege to carry arms in a government approved and regulated manner, flies directly in the face of the fundamental right to keep and bear arms.

yup but not much you can do with the extras unless you had a IC to take them.

The IC doesn't have to be with them when they gain the Pain tokens, they just have to join one turn and then leave again, taking half the tokens with them.

Nice video.
The BA player made at least two mistakes:
1) moving two tanks forward (LR, Rhino) and
2) keeping some Rhinos in reserve.
Against DE, you have to play defensively and you need to bring all your ranged weapons to bear.
The Raiders will try to approach your front ranks.
Staying back will give you at least one or two rounds to shoot them.

Thanks, however I don't see how that first one is a mistake considering those transported units want to be close to work.
wuestenfux wrote:2) keeping some Rhinos in reserve.
They were empty and since it was a game vs Dark Eldar, I didn't want two super-easy kill points just sitting around waiting to get shot by 20 different kinds of Lance weapons...
wuestenfux wrote:Staying back will give you at least one or two rounds to shoot them.
You're absolutely right, but with what from the list I ran, Bolters? Blood Angels are an assault army, and if you noticed, I did keep my ranged weapons in the back. The list wasn't an optimized list. It was a themed list. I unfortunately didn't have the ranged firepower I normally bring but again, I brought a fun (yet mostly successful) list not a ZOMG tourney list. As for maybe holding back the Land Raider Crusader, it is a squad delivery vehicle that has HIGHLY effective short range and decent mid range firepower. Funny thing though, Dark Lances are 36" weapons, and don't care about a Land Raider that is "staying back".
IMO, the only mistakes were:
1) not putting my ENTIRE army out in the middle of the table with 12" moves (since flat-out moving transports that are destroyed also have their passengers killed) to have a lot of counter-charge and counter-fire units all in the same place.
2)Having the Chaplain pass his armor saves to stay in combat and protect the Incubi from my shooting. Oh wait, that's a dice thing!

A: They are removed as casualties.
Since it doesn't say "player's turn", and you aren't GW, it will still be up to the Tournament Organizer to decide this.
And please don't hijack my thread with a discussion on "RAW/RAI". Make a new thread for that.

That's exactly the kind of thought I know I will encounter in tournaments. Luckily
The rulebook specifically states that if the term "turn" is used it refers to player turn unless otherwise noted.
It wasn't an attempt to hijack anything. I merely pointed out a pretty big rules error that would probably negatively effect your play in the future.
1) not putting my ENTIRE army out in the middle of the table with 12" moves
- Agreed that this was your biggest error. With a tactical heavy army, you need to set up for short range firefights and your units must be in position to support each other.
I admit that your army was not optimized vs. DE.
Rhinos are not so easy to destroy even by DE lances. This is what I recognized vs. Tau Devilfishes (side armor 11) today.
Against DE, I'd stay back with the whole army using cover as much as possible to obscure the tanks and shoot the paper-thin Raiders.
