Is there any website, like a wiki or something that is a good source of Dungeons and Dragons info? I'm mainly just wondering what the races are and other background things.

Maybe this belongs in the roleplaying games section....

Wizards of the Coast main website is fairly decent. Unless going for a specific world, there really isn't a background per se. You have books detailing specific campaign settings but you are also encouraged to develop your own. There are a ton of races to choose from. If you have any specific questions we can try to answer them as best we can.

Starting DnD or roleplay in general? Either way:

For 4th - http://dnd4.wikia.com/wiki/Dungeons_%26_Dragons_4.0_Wiki

For Pathfinder - http://pathfinder.wikia.com/wiki/Golariopedia

Since your on a 40k forum, for Dark Heresy/Rogue Trader/ Deathwatch - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warhammer_40,000_Roleplay (I couldn't find anything better :( )

4E and Pathfinder aren't the only way to go. The meat of 3.5 is online for free at d20srd.org. This is perfect if you want to create your own setting instead of using a published one.

As for 40k RPGs:

And WHFRPG:
