Drilling out the barrells on the multi melta is a simple but effective technique for increasing the realism of the model. Otherwise, good work

The base colour doesn't seem to be covering the undercoat well. Is that intentional for the effect it gives?

looking good after such a long break,i agree with drilling out the barrels as well as a little gold paint.try painting a few chips in the paint work to represent battle damage too.
keep up the good work and welcome back to the hobby.

Thanks guys for the nice comments. My intention is to give this ultramarine battle group a very dirty and dishevelled look. None of my models will be shiny.

i'm a fan of heavy washes myself also (see my gallery) but your model needs some color on smaller spots to brighten it up and break up the heavy wash color, dishevelled or not. right now, it looks like you used three colors (blue, silver, white) and then just dipped it wholesale in minwax shade or army painter dip without shaking it off after.

My 2 cents, you did a very neat job so its perfect for gaming.
Some good tips above but it depends on how much effort you want to go too. Try some washes as mentioned but I think highlights would look good, just to bring out the edges a little.
CMON.com has some great dreadnoughts and is good for some inspiration or ideas.

Very dramatic effect Bmax, and welcome back to the hobby. I was in your position about 8 months ago, as far as I can tell you're off to a great start. I echo the advice given already. - drill out the barrels on both guns - use some highlighting to emphasize top edges - gold trim around casket & the like would be a nice counter to the blue I'd add: - clean up the scroll on the left leg. You can dirty it up again afterwards, but change the shade a bit to something more parchment colored (I use bleach bone with sepia wash & white highlights), then write something in it. - think about doing something interesting with your base involving both texture and a color that will compliment the figure - I can see you take time to work on your lenses... you might check out this tutorial by vent. Since I adopted this technique my lenses have gotten better and are much more consistent too. Also remember to get some high gloss, paint on varnish ( GW has some) and paint it over your lenses when done, it will greatly increase their look as a real glass lens and will even reflect the light of the room in a natural way. I often get compliments on how great the highlighting on my lenses is when in truth, it's not my highlighting they're seeing, but the actual reflection of the room lights by the gloss varnish (i.e. the real effect that we're trying to emulate with paint). Just like what the others said, I'd say you should paint a highlight and make sure not to hit the edges and crannies.
And if you want your company to look battle-worn, you could try painting some chips and drybrushing it with Boltgun Metal very lightly to give it a metallic sheen.
Hope that helps.

The blue basecoat looks nice. It has a weathered appearance and ties in well with the dread. For your first renaissance project, id say it looks great!
