Looks like Merc unit attachments do indeed turn merc units into faction units.

And now we're going to see Forces of Distinction (new theme forces!) in No Quarter.

Still no sign of a Cryx merc attachment?
Do we get the flying bonejack instead?

The guess is no Merc Attachment for Cryx or Ret, since the previewed the other three but not for those two, and the article on Merc Attachments mentions the three that were previewed but again no mention of Cryx or Ret.

I can see the Retribution not getting one, but I would like to see a Cryx one that gives the unit the Undead special rule, if only for the modeling possibilities.

Does this indicate that the same thing will happen for Hordes armies in the future?

I'm running trollbloods with boomhowlers, and would love for them to count as in-faction models...

When a warmachine player says unit, they probably mean what you're used to calling
a squad.

I take unit to be any non-warjack/beast or warcaster/warlock, since solos and units follow the same rules.

And if you want a gang of them then Rasheth has a trio of them carting his fat ass around.

Solos and units follow the same rules, except not really.

Units that can't receive orders cannot run, for example, whereas the
same effects don't affect solos.

Also, spells and effects will sometimes buff or hurt entire units vs. single models.

edit: So when we talk about units, we mean groups of models as opposed to just
any warrior model.

I found out that distinction this evening... some of my buffs say "warriors models", some say "warrior unit models" (or to that effect). So I couldn't buff my warlock, even though he's a warrior model, since he's not a unit.

The new merc attachments, for example, couldn't make Eiryss or Rhupert a
faction model since they only attach to units. So they could possibly be
attached to Steelheads of various flavor, but not to solos since solos aren't units.

I'd pretty much buy some of the new mercenary Ogrun (forget their full name) and paint some major part of them cygnar blue to indicate they're currently under contract.

This pretty much gives Cygnar what they've been asking for.
