Hello.

Played GK before, but had a different color scheme on them back then. They were white instead of silver, as they should be.
But now I am leaning on painting them silver as they are intended. Reason is that I like the silver too, only reason I went for white in the beginning was to learn how to pain white.
So what do you guys think?
Going to buy a new set of models for my planned GK army.
Go for white or silver as GW?

Personally I like seeing Gray Knights in different colors. The basic silverish job gets boring after a while. I was planning to go white on my GK's too once I get my hands on them. probably with some blue/purple detailing. We'll see how they turn out.

I like Grey Knights wearing grey. Adeptus Battlegrey with Codex Grey highlights, black bolter casing, and blue blades will look awesome.

Hmm, white? Very Menoth!

You should definitely stick with the white, it's awesome! You could also proxy Menoth models for the inquisitors?

Bare in mind this was some years ago, and my first attempts on white. So it coult turn our better. Specially the red areas.
Hmm never really liked Menoth, played Cygnar myself.

Thing is I am not really happy with the read color at all. Any suggestion on another color to use?
Or perhaps I should do some freehand on the cloth so its not so empty.

Personally the white isn’t a bad idea…. Looks pretty nice actually.
Who’s to say Gray knights can’t be White Knights…. Even sound cool….

Me too I think it looks rad.

I rather like the white/bronze scheme. It looks classic. Why not do some neat freehand on the cloth and keep on with this scheme? The standard silver scheme will get so boring.

The white looks very good and gives them the sense of 'purity' despite all the corruption they face.

Non metallic knights look quite good. I've seen some really impressive red/lava schemes. White/grey is a pretty interesting take on their normal color

I myself always wanted to do something similar to wow paladins

The white looks excellent.

As for the red, maybe it is a bit too flat? Some blended highlights would help alot. For that shade, I would highlight by working in some tanned flesh and edge highlight with a light flesh color. Wash with a very thinned mix of the red and dark green to shade. The effect will be a wine red. The green helps give some cool contrast in the shadows (as oppossed to the warm shading on your white).

If you want a brighter red, I would use scab raed and work in some blood red for highlights. Maybe a bit of orange at the corners. Be careful not to overdo it, though, or it will look very orange.

theonetyrant wrote:Sounds stupid to ask but how did you do the bases, especially the rocks no matter what i do it wont look like a rock.

There are no stupid questions.
The bases are made pretty basic. I bought some stones/rocks from a local aquarium store. These are easy to break into smaller pieces. I think GWs 40k basing kit has these kind of rocks too. BUT you get such a limited amount and it costs alot considering I got the rocks for free in the aquarium store (since I only took a small amount in his eyes).

Now step by step:

1. Glue the rocks onto the base. As my or few as you want.
2. Add sand of your liking. I used bird sand, as its small grain and cheap.
3. Spray black
4. Drybrush brown
5. Lighter brown (khemry brown for example)
6. Final dry brush on some selected points only, bleched bone or similar.

Rocks
1. Space wolves grey
2. Astronomican grey
3. Bleched bone on the very edges.

(today I use Adeptus battle grey - Astronomican grey - Dheneb stone. Gives a slight different one. Not as blue.)

Last step is to add some static grass.
Today I use static grass tufts, these tufts make sure that the grass is standing, and not laying down which normal static grass tend to do.

Yah, the red I didn't really pay much attention to really. I have painted so many red Battle sisters so I was perhaps tired of it all
But I'll definitely make improvements and try out your ideas. Thanks.

Go for the white. When one can paint white effectively on a miniature (like you can sir) keep what you got. Saying that, and reading your intent on the first post, I can see that you are torn between white and silver. Why not have your specialist squads like Paladins different than the others. That way you can have both.

Thorian Enclave Inquisitorial Guard - 6000points
Grey Knights - 4000pts

looking at your work on these knights, i can honestly say it would be a shame to actually paint them silver! it seems that 99.9% believe the white is the best look for them and i have to agree! they should have always been white looking at those models (in the fluff were they ever white?) I love the look to them, your painting skills do them justice and if you do more for your new army, then please, do a blog so we can all watch!

I think the white looks pretty cool, especially the Ivory look with some gold put on there. Very regal and plus, they look more like something holy that would be slaughtering deamons for the Emperor. Go with what you feel, that's for sure, and dig it, that's your shiz brother!

I went for silver.

I know it sounds stupid but try too get your hands on a soon too be old codex.

In it you get a simple set of instructions on how too paint grey knights.

97% of people have useless and blatantly false statistics in their sigs, if you are one of the 8% who doesn't, paste this in your sig to show just what a rebel you are!

If you don't mind me asking, how did you get the white so nice and crisp? I love the white sceme, although I have never been a fan of the silver one.

Well its a secret mix of colors hehe but I'll tell

1. Spray white
2. Paint white so its completely white in all places.
3. Mix devlan mud with a varnish (as long as the varnish is of low viscosity, its okey)
4. Add to the whole model.
5. Paint white mixed with white leaving shades areas.

Now the varnish and devlan mud mix will make the wash flow slower. Similar to a dipping effect, but without the fuss.

The "hard" thing is to get the right mixture of white and water later on. It has to be transparent, but still strong enough to cover the layers behind.
