This is my first attempt at painting any model as I attempt to get into Warhammer 40k
The purity seals are unpainted as I haven't gotten my hands on the paint I need for that yet. Theres definitely plenty of improvements to be made but i think its a good start. These guys have no highlights at all as I'm a bit afraid to dive into that yet
Any and all constructive criticism is more than welcome. I don't really intend on becoming master painters like some of the posters on here but anywhere i can improve is more than welcome.
Note that the guy on the far right is splattered with blood, thought it might be fitting considering i had him wielding that blade thing. Girlfriend wanted me to use it so I had to.
I feel like my guys are too bright for crimson fists though. I was thinking of using asureman wash to fix this but I haven't decided yet.
I used a base coat of Necron Abyss, then a coat of regal blue and thats about it. I washed the dark crevices with badab black. Silver parts are chainmail, red parts are a coat of scab red with a second coat of red gore over it.
Final note is that they were painted in order from left to right, which could show the progression of my painting skills and willingness to experiment in the last guy. Not that it matter's.
Thanks for looking at my marines!

Next time, file down the mold lines and drill your barrels. Overlooking the tiny modelling issues can ruin even the best paint jobs.
Your highlighting and shading needs work. The kneecaps appear monochrome against the upper and lower leg armor and you visually lose detail.
Look at the GW stock pic below and you'll see a lighter color of blue at the edges of the armor sections and actual black at the "creases" where the kneepad comes in contact with the leg armor.

I never noticed the black around the kneecaps but now that you've pointed it out it's glaringly obvious.
Thanks.

The shading on your sergeant's head looks great! Leave a black line around the eyes on the helmets like the armour joints and they'll pop right out.

Welcome to Dakkadakka! As a Crimson Fists commander myself, I'd like to congratulate you on making a classic choice for your marine chapter. You've got a great thing going here and have come to the right place to advance your skills to the next level.
I like the blue a lot. I used Necron Abyss, but followed with Badab Black as a glaze to deepen it more - that's just me though. I think you might benefit from a little bit of Ultramarine Blue line highlighting and possibly Blood Red highlights on the red, in addition to a darker wash in the recessed areas like the kneecap edges. Most folks let me know that my red (Mecharite then Blood then Blood/Blazing Orange equal parts) is a little flat and just doesn't pop enough.
Also, the edging on the shoulderpads looks just a tad sloppy. I have the same problem when painting mine and have learned to take my time to make sure they edges are clean, going back to cover up areas where I've "painted outside the lines". I like the look of the chainmail for the pauldron edges, but I might not use it between the backpack and the vents as it creates a metallic-heavy area - break it up a little.
Finally, when you're ready, look for a tutorial for painting marine eye lenses. This tiny detail is never overlooked and instantly adds quality to your model.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money
"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

That kneecap thing... I normally get some black ink and a very, very fine brush... and use that to outline parts of the model that I want to pop.
Just need a very steady hand.

After the orbital strikes, Thunderhawk bombardments, Whirlwinds, Vindicators, fusion and starfire and finally Battle Brothers with flamers had finished cleansing the world of all the enemies of Man, we built a monastery in the center of the largest, most radioactive impact crater. We named the planet "Tranquility", for it was very quiet now.

Much better than I was when I first started, as everyone else has said you just need some more practice and you'll do great.
As a side note, I hate you for getting your sergeant's face so good. I still can't get the hang of faces... *mumble, mumble*

I was shocked he came out as well as he did, I just tried to be very careful with the amount of paint i used because I was most worried about it coming out blotchy like a lot of faces seem to do. The ogryn flesh really makes it look good imo.

Good job on your first job. The only thing I feel the need to reiterate is mold lines, keep an eye out for them when your assembling, and give them a quick check before you undercoat. But good job on the first squad, I'd be pretty happy with sarge's skin tone

Awesome, considering it's your first time. The sergeant's head is excellent, did you shade it or is it just the camera? Watering down the paints just a bit so the paint isn't as thick. Way better than my first, the first marine i painted was really thick, so my dog decided to eat it. The marine died in the name of the emperor.
