Thinking of getting into Firestorm Armada but wanted to know what models people use to represent the fighters, bombers and interceptors, I would like to have actual models rather than tokens, any ideas?

I use Studio Bergstrom's Fleetscale fighters to represent attack wings. They look fantastic (much better than the pics he has posted), are affordable, and he shipped my order out very quickly. You can check them out here

Another option is Brigade, a UK company that has fighter lines as well. I've ordered from both and I prefer B's models over Brigade, however I think both make an excellent choice.

The GW BFG attack craft minis would work too, although they are a bit pricey.

Yeah i do like the look of those best but the price is the issue. How many models of each type do you need typically?

If you're using the GW, or really any fleet scale models, then you shouldn't need any set amount per base. I think either 3 or 6 looks aesthetically pleasing. I'm 99% sure that FA doesn't have a stated requirement for how many models have to be on the stand. Remember that in space naval games the models are massively abstracted (in regards to size) from what they represent. The number of fighters on a base is another area where I think it's ok to continue this abstraction.

thanks I wasnt sure what the WYSIWYG rules were like not having read the book yet. How many wings can the average carrier hold?

The carriers range from 6-8 wings, and can be any mix of interceptors, fighters, bombers, or assaulters. There really is no WYSIWYG requirement, as long as the square base is about the right size and you can easily distinguish one type of wing from another (just look at the Litko wing markers as an example). As econtutor said, this is pretty abstracted.

Kallistra do a flying stand's worth of ships in a variety of styles, ostensibly for Space Dreadnought 3000. Half a dozen races, so plenty of variety.

"There's a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious—makes you so sick at heart—that you can't take part. You can't even passively take part. And you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all" Mario Savio

Spartan is working on fighter minis but we haven't had any updates on them in a long time. The only one that they showed at all did look very nice, but it's hard to tell when you don't know what scale it would end up being in.

Yeah, I remember seeing those renders last year. I wonder when they will resurface?

At this point, i think it is most likely that we will see them as tokens, like in Dystopian Wars. It just seems like such an elegant solution
