It seems like every other person on this forum has one of those "What color of Magic are you" quiz results in their signature. Speaking as a DCI Judge, how many magic players do we have here? Also, is there ANYTHING like the DCI for warhammer?

I used to play when standard had $25.00 rare cards. Now it isn't anything to have $70.00-$95.00 rares in a standard deck. Forget that, warhammer is a way cheaper game.

I played really competitively for about 3 years.

I absolutely love MTG as a game, I absolutely hate the type of player that is drawn to it.

I finally gave up when I conceded a match because my oponnents breath and BO smelled so bad that I felt like I was going to puke. Im a nurse, so you know it was pretty damn bad if it messed with my stomach.

Have done two big warhammer tournies lately, I was really really happy when I noticed that warhammer appears to draw a more mature, and hygenic crowd for some reason. Granted there was your one or two smelly guys, but nothing like I would experience playing magic.

It's funny because when me and a few friends got into 40k all we were asking was Magic Questions. In magic now a days you .deck (go online and look at deck lists that win the tournies) and there's not much like that in 40k. In magic there are Decks that win. Period. In 40k there are good things but there isn't a list that just wins. Other than GK it seems lately. People are complaining up a storm about them.

As for all these damn rules questions everyone has is there a hot line? Or a group of judges? Or training? Or freaking anything? I mean, i took tests and qualified to run Magic the Gathering tournies. I can do the same for warhammer 40k.

I play, my friends play. It's all fairly friendly though. I've never been to a tournament and only played at a store once. No strict formats unless we're doing something like a draft.

I've recently started playing. Luckily a lot of people in my gaming group play, none of us have optimised decks and we try not to take it too seriously. If I was forced to play competitively with others I would probably stop. It's good to be able to slip in a game if we finish 40k early or don't feel like dragging our army cases around.

I play it with friends. I would play it competitively if it weren't so expensive to make a good deck. Although some of the new starter decks look pretty good. With some tweeks you could have an effective, affordable army.

Right now Teneb the Harvester, although I have a nice Arcum Dagsson deck that wins with Blasting Station combo...

I just recently purchased the Knights and Dragons pack. I'm looking to get familiar with the current rules.

I haven't played in 3 or 4 years... and when I did play around that time I was getting accustomed to the set that was releasing because prior to that it had been about 10 years since I played magic... I still have a MTG online account... I should probably see if its still good considering I paid for tons and tons of virtual cards.

I use to play probably over 15 years ago. I had a blast playing with some good friends. I have no idea how the game has changed since then, but I have often thought about playing it again.

About 3-4 years ago the game got REALLY dumbed down.

They changed the way the stack works, for the worse imo.

Last time I played was back in 2003, those were some fun times. I have no idea how the game is now though since it is pretty much all warhammer out here.

For what it is worth, I used to really like MtG. I would still play it if it didn't get so expensive. I really liked how rules were addressed. We didn't have to wait years for a FAQ. Questions were solved really quickly.

The price though...too much. I didn't mind extended or vintage having expensive cards, but standard shouldn't have a card valued over $30.00, let alone $95.00. People still pay it though, but I have noticed that the FNM scene has been cut in half since the cards got so expensive.

I really enjoyed the game, until everyone had "net decks" with combos someone else came up with that they bought the cards on ebay to create, 4 of each rare card needed and all that. I thought GW was bad with overpriced WYSIWYG and poorly thought out availability of crucial options on sprues, but that can be creatively circumvented, and actually takes some love and care on the part of the hobbyist. Magic players with really good decks nowadays are simply buying a competative edge and I hate games that favor economics over skill. Over the 15 or so years it went from one of the most open ended abstract creative palettes to an extremely predictable game with variety that includes such descriptive phrases as "zombie/elf deck" or "red blue denial deck" or "sliver deck" or "cleric deck", "wake deck", "B/G madness wurm deck" all of which are well known catch phrases for certain gimicks that have been seen a million times before with only mild changes to the composition (if any) varying it from the idea someone posted on the internet, or an idea inherent to the way tribal creature cards all became such stackable no brainers.

Almost all magic players play like that. It's one reason i hate playing with a lot of my friends. They get so damn aggressive.

Meh, I have a somewhat decent Mono-White Soldier Weenie, but the way the Standard works is dumb. The 3 most recent blocks only, methinks, and the current core set... invalidates a LOT for non-casual, IMHO.

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

Standard is the casual format IMHO. When you look at vintage your talking $2000 decks. Legacy your talking $1000 decks. Standard you can get a good deck for like $250. Extended is around $150 i think (unless you play fairies which is wining extended everywhere for $300). The only issue with standard is you have to keep updating. Legacy once your in your really in.... until they print a card that nerfs you and your deck is no longer worth anything. My friend argues extended is the most casual but that's because no one plays it and no one gives a gak about it. Also, it's 2 most recent blocks for standard.

That is why i draft or play sealed for tournies.

EDH is the best format. Casual and fun.

Whoa there. Standard: 4x Jace = $300, and just about all the hot decks run that. That's not even counting the mana base and other cards in the decks, some of which are in the same price range and Mr. Wallet Sculptor (and very few of whom will retain their value after they rotate out of standard, sometimes extended).
Legacy decks can be anywhere from a few tenners (certain goblin builds, Led-less affinty) to more expensive than most Vintage decks.
Most Vintage decks these days aren't sanctioned anyway, and allow proxies, severely reducing the actual cost of the decks - though dual lands have become ridiculously expensive recently, mostly due to legacy's popularity.
In any case, for both Vintage and Legacy, the initial entry fee is quite high, but after that you can pretty much sustain your hobby on a few tenners every few months as there's usually only a few cards in each new set that have an impact on these older formats with their huge card pools, and often these aren't even very wanted by the standard crowd.

I do agree on most Magic players' WAAC attitude though. It's the company's own fault for focussing on tournament play so much.

I, and my whole D&D/Warhammer (40k, fantasy and LotR) play MTG, we don't take it too serious. I got a few decks, some are very competitive (Like my treefolk deck, which i never play with) and some are just for fun. (Like my Dragon deck)
I'm always in for a game.

I quit playing magic a while ago (6th edition had just come out) but I was wondering where the game was at now. Sucks that it has gotten so that you can really only compete with certain decks. Ruins the fun of the competition for me.

My decks actually a custom made control deck, not top tier, but it does well enough against the local metagame. Which is actually quite top tier, I still enjoy the game though either way as I'm just in it for fun.

I've basically quit now as at my local FLGS therea re too many proxy net decks and there are two very distinctive skill levels wiht little inbetween. I occasionaly play in the prereleases/drafts but that aside i rarely touch them now. I much prefer the WoW TCG (I dont play the PC version) or V:tES.
