Hardened Veteran Guardsman

Here are some of the minis I've been working on lately. The two IG's are for my Veteran squad with 3 meltas and shotguns, and the SM is a prototype for my BA successor chapter, using the Brazen Claw scheme for the regular troops. The blitz makes it look really weird, but I don't have proper lighting to take a shot without it. I just need to redo the blue highlights on the marine in another color, and the lines between the red/blue needs to be tidy'ed up for the next go around.

It's not the regular Dakka standard, but I'm pretty happy with the outcome, and also very happy with the bases I made for them. I hope to improve my techniques alot on my upcoming army project, with the marines. It seems a lot less stressful/dull to paint marines nicely, compared to painting 70 or 100 IG models. And I have a lot of very cool ideas in my head for conversion and stuff, that I hope I can bring to life.

Anyways, heres the picture.

These look good, man. I like the washes you used.

The color scheme on the marine is pretty slick, actually.

Good job!

Your painting is really solid, I like it. I'm not sure I'd give the Cadians blue eyes though - it just makes me think "Spice must flow" while black pupils would look like actual eyes. The marine could use those lines between colors straightened out but that's all I'd change.

You might try adding a little bit of lens effects to the marine's eyes... Mix your green with a little white & put a thin line across the bottom of the lens, then put a tiny white dot high and to the rear of each lens to appear as a reflection of the glass (or whatever the Imperium is using for lenses now-a-days.

Thanks for the comments and the tips for improving them. The marines eyes are pretty dull, so I'll try that technique to improve them

Here's a blurry close-up of one of mine (granted it's not a typical sculpt, but it's good to give you an idea). I make my eyes look more like lenses than glowing eyes, but a lot of the principals are the same. Put the lightest shade in the front and down, darkest at the back & top with a little white mark back there to give the illusion of a reflection. I usually use black and 3 shades of my eye color. You don't have to get that fancy to see a big improvement in your eyes.

Good luck!
