Hi there!
I am currently working on my small IG airfield/field command diorama, which as usual is a lot more work than I initially thought....
Since the completion is still many months away, I thought I'd show off the first three completed items: the valkyrie, landing pad and (air) command tower. They are basically finished, although I will be adding some ground crew elements, barrels, ammo crates, missiles later once I got the terrain board itself done.
I still have lots to do (pillboxes, AA emplacements, 2 leman russ tanks in a maintenance bay, guardsmen, the terrain board itself, etc, etc )
And now for the pics, enjoy and C&C as always welcome.

The rust around the rivets is fantastic. I can't help but feel, though, that the surrounding metal is a bit too clean and shiny, by comparison. Could simply be glare on the metallic paint masking more thorough weathering, though.

The contrast between the rusted and non-rusted metal is less extreme in real life than in the pictures, however I see where you're coming from and agree.
I think I'll go over the metal parts either with a very thinned smoke or devlan mud wash/glaze, that should dirty it up quite nicely and tie it more together.
this was the first time I used oil paints mixed with pigments and lots of thinner to simulate the rust. I would recommend people to try it, it's a very effective and relatively quick technique.

Could you do a tutorial on the use of pigments?

dantay_xv wrote:Could you do a tutorial on the use of pigments?
Stuff I used:
- old GW fine detail brush
- Vallejo pigments "73108, brown iron oxide" and "73106, burnt sienna"
- "burnt umber" oil paint from "Royal Talens, Rembrandt series", This is more of a paste than actual paint and comes in a tube.
- turpentine or white spirits
- 3 cups
For the method itself:
- I prepared a mixture of some turpentine, oil paint and brown iron oxide pigment in the first cup. I really don't know the exact ratio, but the oil paint was heavily thinned (probably at least around 30:1)
- the second and third cup were filled with clean turpentine.
- I wet the spots I wanted to weather with clear turpentine from cup 3.
- I applied the mixture from the first cup to the rivets and any other places where rust spots would be heaviest, around 10 spots/rivets at a time. (basically didn't want all the turpentine to evaporate)
- I rinsed the brush in cup 2
- I took clean turpentine with the brush from cup 3 and dragged the still wet spots with the mixture made earlier (around the rivets, etc) down.
- I applied some additional clean turpentine to the spots further away from the "rust source" to wash them out a bit and fade them.
- I repeated this for all rivets/rust spots.
- Finally I did the same steps for most spots with the lighter pigment (burnt sienna) without adding the oil paint to the mix and without dragging the brush down, I only washed it out a little bit.
I sealed the piece with a layer of clear coat before doing the weathering. I read it would improve the flow of the turpentine
I hope this helps.
