These are some pictures of my converted Imperial Guard army that I've made to look like old war photos. I'm not sure if that is kosher in this forum, so let me know if this thread belongs somewhere else.

The conversions are a simple mash up between Cadians and Empire Archers, which I think worked pretty effectively. I was going for a greatcoat/steam punk look, and the feathered hats really did that well. Let me know what you think about the conversions and the "photo look." I think I might have over done the damage on a few of them.

Those photos look really great! especially the first one!

tho I think you should drill out the barrels for the bolters on the leman russ, I think they ruin the pics abit as they are right now.
but hey! that's just my opinion.

but exept for that, awesome photos! And the conversions too! keep it up

Thanks, and that is a great idea for the bolters. I have never drilled out any gun barrels before, how does one go about doing that?

Lookin good, just a suggestion though: photoshop out the bases. It's really only an issue in the second photo, but it kills the realism immensely. Assuming you're using photoshop, what you want to do is use the clone stamp (IIRC thats what its called) tool to take the surrounding ground texture and cover up the bases.

Wooow, this is awesome. You should take pictures while gaming with them, and perhaps make something of a 'news reel' with it. Great job.

Thanks for all the nice comments (ego: +10)

@scrazza - I really like the newsreel idea, I'll have to remember to take photos next time I play!

@chaos0xomega - I've never played with the clone tool much, I'll definitely be checking that out.

@rubirub - I'll see about posting some color pictures soon! The sepia ones help cover up the painting mistakes though

You could do a comic in that style as well. I've seen it done before, Battles being reported in comic form. These old warpics would make that look even more awesome.

The models sure look pretty. But some of the pics are pretty blurry, what camera did you use?

I find army painting tedious, so I paint single figures for the fun of it.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

I would imagine it was done very well on Photoshop? I'm not sure though, could have been other editing software.

I used my JVC camcorder, which also takes still pictures. It doesn't do well in low light situations though, and I didn't have a lot of light on some of them, which is another good reason for making them look like old photos, lol.

@loner - sevenups is correct in his guess at photoshop. When I made these ones I was still using Photoshop Elements 7 (Probably the best photo-editor you can get for the price, it's less than 100 bucks.) As you can see, in a lot of the color images, I had a green cloth in the background to help me more easily cut it out in editing. After cutting that out with the various photoshop tools, I just added different pictures of wartorn cities on the layer behind it. That was probably the most tedious part, since it takes a lot of fine tuning to get the edges perfect. After that I used some sepia photo effects. They are built right into Photoshop Elements, I can't remember now if the pro version has them built in or if you have to find actions/do t yourself. After making them sepia, I drew some of the damage/dust particles on and, with a few, I added some light noise and texturing to make them look a little less crisp. Let me know if you make some, I'd love to see them!

Take a small hobby drill, and carefully drill out the center of the barrel, then use a hobby knife, put it straight into the hole you drilled, and carefully drag it around in a circle or 2 (like you would turn a screwdriver), to give the inside barrel a beveled look. make sure the blade is sharp so it scrapes the plastic well.

Great work by the way, i love the idea, and i have to say i may steal it for future projects

The 6th pic of the Leman Russ is fantastic. Always loved the "real life" pics in the IA series of books and these do them great justice. Please keep them coming.

I'm not a huge fan of the conversions, it just isn't my style, but I love the effect on the pictures. The first picture looks epic!
