Hi folks. I'm finally putting up some pics of the Tyranid stuff I've painted up since the new codex arrived last year. Some of you might remember my Genestealer Cult and phase two
blog. Well, it got put on hiatus as I refreshed my old trusty Tyranid army. I figured after umpteen years of collecting Tyranids, how much of an impact could a new book have? A few months of painting and I'd be ready to go!
Umm...yeah. Try like a year of solid painting,
lol. Anyway, enough yapping...here are the pics, taken with our new camera (which I'm still getting the hang of).
Tyranid Prime. This was an easy one...I just refreshed the paint job on my 2nd ed. Tyrant and fashioned the deathspitter. I noticed that a lot of my highlighting from 10+ years ago was very exaggerated compared to now. The quick fix was to apply a glaze of Dark Angels Green to make the highlights more subtle. Oh, I also rebased it on a 40mm round (40mm round didn't exist back in the day).
Tyrant Guards. These are actually the third set of Tyrant Guards I've painted. I had a couple sets of the 3rd ed versions, and before that also fashioned my own after the 3rd ed codex arrived without models for
TG. Might be a few longbeards here that remember their appearance in
WD...I used metal Warriors and built spineshields outta bottle caps and green stuff.
FYI, the lash whips are cut from my 3rd ed versions.
Hive Guards. These were the first new models that I painted up. Haven't actually been using them much lately since I've been running reserve armies.
Venomthropes. Love the models overall, but I trimmed the vents back maybe 20%. Just thought the proportions were better like that.
Lictors. Also finally got some current Lictors painted up. Really love these models too, although I find their standard arms to be a bit on the "gorilla" side. To fix this, I used Genestealer arms instead (which I was then easily able to cut and reposition).
DOOM! Pretty simple stuff here. Took a current Zoey, sawed the head off, then added a head from one of my 2nd ed Zoeys.
Raveners. Some plastics to add to my existing 4th ed metal versions. Solid enough models, if ridiculously overpriced. I also think I like the slightly finer features of the metals better. But like I said, solid enough.
Tervigons. When I built these, my primary thought was that there would be a Tervigon kit made...someday. So I decided to make the Tervigonization of my Carnifexes something I could undo. The spawning pouches and large bases are magnetized. And the arms were of course magentized too. So they can go right back to being Carnifexes when the Tervigon kit is released.
Forge World Trygon. I got this a while back for being in a friend's wedding. Love the model. Lots of detail absent on the
GW version. On the other hand, those side spines are a tremendous pain in the butt. There's no way they stay on without pinning, which gets extremely tedious. I gave up at one point and even green stuffed some spines. Still a great model, though.
Trygons. I used magents on the arms and heads to allow quick swaps between Trygons, Primes and Mawlocs. In the pic I have a Trygon and a Prime. Note that I skipped and green stuffed over the mandible holes on the Trygon head to give it visual consistency with the
FW version (which lacks mandibles).
Mycetic Spores. Fashioned these outta African warty gourds, I s#*t you not. If you're interested in learning how, the article is
here.
