Painlord Titan Princeps of Slaanesh

Dallas, TX

Had an absolute blast at the Railhead Rumble at the A-kon anime convention in Dallas last weekend. If anyone wants a great tournament, come here next year. Well-run, plenty of space, PLENTY of nicely sized terrain, and a good chunk of prize support. Oh, and a food court nearby. Not sure they can guarantee that last one every year, but it was pretty convenient.

Unfortunately, I didn't take any pictures. I don't know why, I just.....iunno. Only used it for cosplayers and women in corsets, I guess. Armies tend to go by the wayside when those are involved.....anyway!

Because I'm not just a bad person but a forgetful bad person, I'm also unsure about names from some of my opponents. For some reason several wanted to keep their army lists - and, also for unknown reasons, glanced at mine and gave it back. I printed out nine copies why.....? But because of that first bit, some games will be given "my best shot" when it comes to what I faced.

Tournament setup:
Day 1 was a bracket day. We all play 4 games, with simple win/loss based on how many of 3 objectives you were able to achieve. The results of this day would choose your bracket, high or low, for day 2. Seemed like this opened itself for abuse [I'll bring a badass army and throw all Day 1's games so I can dominate the lower bracket, mwahaha!] but nobody appeared to take advantage of that.

Day 2 the fun begins, with 3 missions with primary and secondary objectives as well as bonus points available. I'll give a quick rundown of each mission in their reports. On with the show!

6x long fangs, 5 missile launchers, las/plas razorback

Mission:
3 objectives. First objective is to get kill points. Second objective is to capture objectives, which there are 3 - one in the center that explodes and is worth 2, and one in each deployment zone. Third objective is to kill the enemy's most expensive unit. Mine was a squad of chaos marines, since they're identical to the other squads of chaos marines. His was the squad of wolves that was with the murderous hurricane priest.

We put our objectives across the board from each other. He takes the first turn and moves on everything. Rune priest with squad was out in front in a rhino. On my turn I blitzed forward and tried to kill that squad, succeeding in doing so and grabbing an early advantage. My army pretty much disembarked all at once and it looked really bad for him - 45 marines bearing down on two squads of long fangs [one was way off to the side], the two dreads, and mostly empty razorbacks.

I lost my princes early - one of them tried to lash some long fangs off to the side over to charge them, and failed his leadership test. Things were going well for me.....and then they went badly. A dreadnought made it to my noisemarine squad I used to kill the squad with his runepriest, and a squad of grey hunters charged a 10-man marine squad. I killed none, he killed one, I broke and ran. I got away, but that unit was useless other than to grab my objective later.

Long story short, everything was going well for me until turn 4. I had killed all his long fangs on the right extept for one model, a small squad of grey hunters down to 2 models, and they ducked into razorbacks and drove away, robbing me of kill points. The dreadnoughts were safely in close combat with noisemarines and I lost both my defilers turn 2 to deadly accurate shooting - no exaggeration, he missed a SINGLE lascannon shot on turn 6 and that was it. Those 2 grey hunters I couldn't kill grabbed his objective - I thought sure I was going to win at least that one since I was doing so well, but couldn't seal the deal. He definitely got me on kill points, and got my CSM squad when I failed a ton of armor saves and got engaged with his dreadnought. Another failed leadership test [lost 1 marine] and they were gone.

Funny twist? I tank shocked his rune priest + grey hunters off the board, securing the third objective. Two tied objectives and he got me on kill points for an overall draw.

Game 2:
Player: Eric
Army: Necrons
HQ

Heavy Support:

3 heavy destroyers

Elites:
2 individual Tomb Spyders

Mission:
3 Objectives. First one: Kill enemy HQ Second one: Grab more of 5 objective markers. You must be holding one of the two central "control" objectives before you can claim any others - I love this system btw. Third objective: Table quarters

I won the roll and took first turn. He put his warriors in reserves, deploying only destroyers.

I'll keep this quick - the game was a massacre. I lashed a destroyer unit forward and charged with a defiler and both princes. The princes killed 4/5 and the defiler.....whiffed all of his attacks, that beautiful beautiful machine! He passed leadership and I stayed in combat.

He joined the combat with his lord, which wounded his assassination target. He was wounded and I killed the obliterator, but he stayed. His shooting immobilized a rhino and that was about it.

Chosen came out from outflank and shot at a tomb spyder, bouncing off its 3+ cover save thanks to the swarm of scarabs it made. Good move! Then his dice insulted him. After a marine squad missed all their meltagun shots, I thought I was going to lose the unit - but then they made 5 wounds with bolters, and he failed all 5. More shooting at the other unit of destroyers and they were all swept from the field. His lord died in hth and I consolidated onto him - he didn't get up. His warriors came from reserves one at a time. My chosen were spared in hth with his spyder and eventually killed the swarm, causing fearless wounds that dropped the spyder.

The game ended on turn 4 when he phased out, and he had unfortunately killed 4 models. His dice were very unkind to him, and the matchup wasn't nice either. We shook hands and enjoyed a very, VERY long lunch break.

Mission:
3 Objectives. First one: 3 objective markers. Second one: Table Quarters Third one: Recon, get more units in enemy deployment zone
Special rule, warp rift: In your movement phase, grab an infantry unit, remove it from the board, and deep strike it somewhere. No rules or wargear affect the distance or scatter of the deepstrike [warp quake works fine].

I'm making these too long, so I'll try to make it quick. I pulled an unorthodox tactic for me and reserved everything. He moved forward turn 1, then turbo-boosted to about 15" from my board edge turn 2. Big mistake. I got 2 noisemarine squads, 3 CSM squads, a defiler, and both princes on. I shook several vehicles, downed a wych raider and lashed them, and they got pinned. Killed a venom filled with wyches too, then killed the wyches.

That was pretty much it. Though I didn't kill a whole lot that turn, I was on his ass like white on rice and rode him solid for the rest of the game. The special rule was a godsend, allowing me to take units he'd disengaged from by using his mobility to fly to a flank and deepstrike them in striking distance. I won all three objectives.

Game four:
Player: Russel Adams
Army: Witch Hunters/Sisters of Battle
Mission:
3 Objectives. First one: Assassination, kill their HQ. Second one: Kill points. 3rd one: kill their most expensive unit
Special rules: Night fight starting turn 4 if you roll a 3+, turn 5 if you roll a 2+, and automatically on turn 6.

This game left me hurting. It was kind of like game one in that it started really really well. I rolled on, took minimal casualties. Took out a squad of sisters, an exorcist with outflanking chosen, his inquisitor lord and unit, and his canoness when she charged me and rolled 3 1's for armor saves.

.....and then everything went to hell. His rhinos kept getting wrecked if I could hurt them, nothing more, leaving a wall of flaming wreckage. Terrible difficult terrain rolls slowed my noisemarines in the backfield to a crawl, and they couldn't get forward to use S5 Ap3 doomsirens on tasty tasty T3 sisters. My squads up front failed all their morale checks and kept dying to flamers/bolters/dangerous terrain from wrecks or running away. In one turn he killed both defilers and both daemon princes in a stunning display of dice. My daemon princes passed two invulnerable saves the entire tournament by the way - rather annoyed at that. My damage curve fell off the deep end and his exorcists killed a rhino a turn, despite massive cover.

In the end, on the bottom of turn 6, I had 10 kill points and he had 12. I blew up a rhino for 11, but then my dice failed me and his became god-like even more, as a doomsiren bounced off a group of tightly clustered sisters due to their 3+ invul. I knew they had that, but he passed them ALL, and my close combat fell through after that. 12-11 on kill points and tied on both other objectives, I lost this one.

There were some.....odd interpretations of tank movement and tank shock during the game, and I wondered if we were going to get into some serious arguments about it. Eventually I caved - it wouldn't make that big a deal, and if I have to get into the technicalities of how a tank can pivot when next to enemy troops then I've obviously decided I can't win on army to army and I must now win by "hah I know the rules' technical English better than you". But I'm fairly sure he used his one-shot braziers of holy fire more than once, I got mixed up in which squad had an eviscerator [my fault] and he re-tried a faith power that he failed once, sure that he could do it. I checked and he couldn't, but he was rapid-firing a squad of 5 chosen with flamers and such as well, so BEST case scenario I might have lived to be killed by a storm bolter - again, no big deal and an easy enough mistake.

As I said I wondered if we were going to get into serious arguments - but we didn't. Game went on, real nail-biter, and we chatted for a while afterwards. He bought my sisters of battle army, too! Wewt.

Screw this game. Jesse is from my town, and he is a very skilled player. He steamrolls every opponent he comes across, and tends to be rather arrogant about his ability to out-play anyone. He claims dashofpepper's ork and dark eldar lists are jokes and that he would love to play him to crush him.

So I tell him to put his money where his mouth is and come to tournaments. He refuses to pay the entry fee. He's vowed to spend as little on the hobby as possible [can't blame him, he has 30,000 points of Black Legion and various Black Legion counts-as-the-latest-broken-marine-codex], and thus only plays in the 'Ard Boyz tournament because it's free. So we had an understanding. I'd pay for his entry fee so that I could either see him actually win, or see him humbled by losing to some of the better players out there. In return, I get whatever prize support he'd get by winning.

Jesse likes to avoid responsibility though, and avoids promises and commitment. Not wanting to be expected to perform, he throws the game. Bad deployment, bad decisions, he worms his way through my army managing to avoid killing important units. He doesn't do stupid things like forgetting to shoot or assault, but everything always seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong time [he also, legitimately, failed every pinning test when I wrecked his vehicles. So that actually made it difficult for him without help]. He manages to get the bonus points so his score is "as high as it can be, as a loss" but by not winning, and not winning to ME, he's absolved himself of the responsibility of needing to win the tournament, and I can't complain because after all, I beat him myself. He went on to massacre his next two opponents, get a very VERY high painting score, and get max sportsmanship. He would have won best overall, easily, if he still got those two opponents after beating me [which he easily could have].

I'll say this though, the game was VERY fun to play, despite knowing what he was up to. Sure of our good sportsmanship scores, we called each other names, insulted each other's paint jobs, cussed each other out, and whenever it came time for him to shoot I'd move his models out of range, just to be a jerk. It was great fun [obviously I put the model back each time and if there was ever any contention about whether something was in or out, I called it in], and very liberating. Still, he's a jerk for throwing the game.

Mission 6:
Player: John Connelly
Army: Chaos Space Marines
Mission:
Primary: Kill Points
Secondary: Table Quarters
Bonus 2 points: Get chosen HQ within 12" of center at game end
Bonus 2 points: Get chosen unit within 12" of center at game end

His army:
HQ
Daemon prince, mark of slaanesh, wings, warp time
daemon prince, mark of slaanesh, wings, lash

Troops
9 CSM, melta, champion with combi-melta, powerfist in a rhino w/ havoc launcher
7 CSM, melta, champion with combi-melta, powerfist in a rhino w/ havoc launcher
7 plaguemarines, 2 meltas, champion with powerfist in rhino w/ havoc launcher
7 plaguemarines, 2 meltas, champion with powerfist in rhino w/ havoc launcher

With such a small model count, I'm sure I've got this game. Then he chooses to reserve his two CSM squads and a daemon prince. Thusly outnumbered, and with me going first, I'm quite confident.

Game opens by double-lashing a squad of obliterators into combat with both princes and a defiler. I crush them and consolidate such that the defilers close in in front of the prince, who consolidates back so he can't be lashed. My opponent is impressed. He moves up, fails to do any damage, and one squad of obliterators in the backfield misses all three shots. Ouch.

I move up, immobilizing one rhino on difficult terrain. My defilers move to either side of a rhino full of plaguemarines, with another rhino aaaaaalmost right behind it. I'm hoping to wreck it and cause the unit to be destroyed, at least partially, because they can't get out. My princes move to center field, expecting his reinforcements. I lash a squad of obliterators forward and fire 3 rhino's combi-meltaguns at them, as well as the 2 meltas from each of my 3 CSM squads out their top hatches. I kill a single obliterator.

.....ouch, what a waste. I lash those obliterators back again, not wanting them to charge me. The defilers succeed in wrecking the rhino....but there's enough space, barely, for all seven plaguemarines to survive. Argh!

One of his CSM squads comes on the board behind my defiler, his other squad of plaguemarines get out, and the disembarked ones move into a building next to the other defiler. I lose a rhino and both defilers this turn, giving him a lead on kill points.

I get my chosen in from reserves, and they botch it, ending up on the wrong side where nobody is.

I double lash the squad of plaguemarines that got out of their rhino of their own volition, shot them, and double-charged them with daemon princes. My meltaguns, six of them, worked on the obliterators again - it took all six to kill those two damn things, and I was hoping to use some of those guns on the plaguemarines in the center. Two doomsirens and pistols later, the plaguemarines are down to three models. My rhino that immobilized itself on terrain repairs!

His prince and second squad move on the board. They pop a noisemarine rhino and kill the noisemarines. His obliterators in the backfield miss all three shots a third turn in a row. His prince lashes some noisemarines forward and charges, killing three. He's way ahead on kill points now. I have to fix this!

He casts warp time as I enter turn four. My repaired rhino immobilizes itself again before it can even pivot. I move my chosen forward and get out to shoot his prince, and position my prince for a charge. My other prince goes to help out my noisemarines. One squad of CSM drive fast towards the obliterators in back field and get out to shoot them, but they're out of range. The other marines get out of their rhinos to shoot plaguemarines, though one of them has horribly been slowed by dangerous terrain, and has practically no shots. A doomsiren, his noisemarine friends, and 20 marines kill one plaguemarine. The noisemarines charge, killing one more, leaving the champion alive. My chosen shoot his daemon prince, and he passes all his invulnerable saves. I charge him with my prince. I do 2 wounds. He does 3. I lose by 1, and fail the save for my last wound. My other daemon prince had wounded himself on dangerous terrain, but now joined the fight. Wounding his prince once, he elects to attack the noisemarines, wiping them out. Losing by 1, I take another wound with a failed save.

His turn 4, he wipes out the chosen and kills another rhino with his obliterators, backing away. His rhinos with CSM stay back, and the empty plaguemarine rhino is driving away. In close combat, our lash princes wound each other. His plague champion kills two noisemarines, and the noisemarines do no damage to him. I pass my fearless wounds.

My turn 5, I charge 10 marines into the lone plaguemarine champion, and 10 marines into the lash prince. The other 10 marines move forward and shoot the obliterators in the backfield with meltaguns, but do nothing. Chosen rhino tries to drive away. In combat, I fail to kill the plague champion, and he fails to do any damage. His prince kills my lash prince, and my lash prince does nothing to his. Luckily I charged him with 10 marines, which drag him down.

His turn 5, he hunts down the chosen rhino, failing to do significant damage. His daemon prince flies into the center 12" circle and waits behind a wall. If he clears it, he faces 20 rapid-firing marines and the remnants of a noisemarine squad. His obliterators kill another rhino, backing away. In close combat, his plague champion finishes off the noisemarines, and does not die. My marines hold.

My turn 6, there's nothing to be done. The selected squad for bonus points moves into the center, the chosen rhino tries to tank shock the enemy CSM squad to no avail, and the third full 10-man CSM squad goes for table quarters. In close combat, my marines don't kill his plague champion again, and he misses his attacks.

His turn 6, his obliterators kill another rhino, his CSM kill my chosen rhino, and his prince charges the immobilized - repaired - immobilized rhino, wrecking it. In close combat I FINALLY kill the plaguemarine champion.

With the loss of those last 3 rhinos, I now no longer have table quarters either, and he's got me on kill points like seventeen to five. His selected unit is dead, but his HQ is in the center for 2 bonus points and I have the opposite.

Never before have I had such a horrific loss with so MUCH of my army still alive. Thirty going strong chaos space marines and some noisemarines alive and kicking, and yet I'm crushed. Basically, despite some really clever tricks in the beginning turns with double lash, his decision to go in reserves helped him immensely. I wasted two turns with everything hunting down that second unit of obliterators, and threw my defilers away in a gamble to try to kill a squad on a model placement issue. End result, my entire army was 24" away from the two CSM squads and daemon prince that went cruising around that area killing 4 kill points and avoiding retribution. He basically avoided me and killed rhinos the entire game, and played it supremely well. It didn't help that the lone plaguemarine champion held the center for six rounds of combat. I hate plaguemarines. When I take power weapons and fists they fail horribly, then I find situations like this where if I just.....had.....a powerfist!!!! I'd have been golden.

Game 7, final:
Player: Will Ferguson
Army: Space Wolves
Mission:
primary: 2 objectives
secondary: reduce all enemy units to half strength or worse
Bonus: 4 points - choose 4 enemy units from non-HQ, non-troops slots and kill those for 1 bp each.

Obviously, Will's army hasn't changed from game 1.

This game was another nail-biter with Will. I was forced to go first, and drove everything up as fast as I could, popping smoke. He managed to wreck only a single rhino as I passed nearly all my cover saves. Boss!

Turn 2: Two of my rhinos immobilize themselves trying to cross difficult terrain. One of them is in the way of my defiler. D'oh! EVERYONE gets out of their rides, blitzing his army. I won't hold anything back and this will end soon one way or another. I pop a razorback and kill all the 5 grey hunters inside. Wanting his dreads dead before they tie up my deadly doomsirens like last time, I fire battle cannons and miss horribly.

His turn 2: He does no damage with most of his shooting, but does immobilize another rhino, gun down a daemon prince, and reduce another daemon prince to 1 wound. He also immobilizes a defiler and blows off the guns. He unloads everything and charges back. 20 grey hunters with priests charge 20 marines, and 6 grey hunters charge 5 noisemarines. He comes out of fight #2 with 3 grey hunters, and wipes out the two CSM squads with no casualties in return. He almost consolidates into delicious doomsiren shape, but remembers and spreads out.

Turn 3: Regardless, he's still in good doomsiren position. The noisemarines pile into a rhino for extra distance and protection and my prince moves so he's in range to lash one of his squads, but out of runepriest range. Everything else advances, but unfortunately a squad of 10 marines that was supposed to support a squad of noisemarines on the left rolls snake eyes for terrain, not getting in range of a nearby dreadnought I'm sure wants to charge my noisemarines They can't run either, getting 3 inches. Chosen shoot the small grey hunters and charge them. Daemon prince rolls box cars on lash and kills himself.

.....WHAT? NO! Oh crap, there it goes. I didn't care I was losing 20 CSM - my doomsiren would take a serious toll on BOTH units because I was going to lash one right into base contact with the other and manage to catch like 18 marines under the template. And he FAILS! And KILLS HIMSELF! This is horrible. I cover seven marines with the doomsiren and kill.....one. Ugh. Other shooting accounts for a few more, downing them to 3. My chosen kill his grey hunters and advance. My noisemarines on the other side charge 3 stationary razorbacks. We blow off the plasma cannon of one but do no other significant damage.

His turn 3: Dreadnought charges noisemarines that charged razorbacks [dammit]. Other dreadnought wrecks noisemarine rhino on my right. Squad of grey hunters charges noisemarines and kills them, losing a few. Other squad of grey hunters loads in razorback and runs away. Missiles and lascannons pepper defilers, blowing a cc arm off one but leaving the other untouched. Chosen go to ground in the open for the 6+ cover save and one lives, but he breaks.

My turn 4: Marines on the left move up and shoot his dreadnought that's not in combat, blowing off an arm. He charges the immobilized defiler, does no damage, and loses two. They fall back, and my rhinos escort them off the board the rest of the game.

His turn 4: He kinda wanders around. He shoots everything at the defilers, managing to strip EVERY weapon off the damaged one before finally destroying it, but not touch the other.

My turn 5: I move the marines up and take a potshot at the rhino with his priest and last 3-man scoring unit in it, missing completely. My defiler that's mobile charges and wrecks a razorback, right in the FACE of his 10 long fangs.

His turn 5: He shoots at the 10-man CSM squad with his razorbacks and rune priest, reducing them to 4 but they hold. EVERYTHING else goes to the other defiler. Dreadnought autocannons in the rear, 15 missile launchers, some razorback lascannons and plasma - it stands strong, losing just a battle cannon. His other dread finally wipes out the noisemarines it charged.

My turn 6: I'm fairly amused by the invincible defiler. I forget about my last CSM squad completely because it's behind a large building and I can't see. My empty rhinos drive around, and the defiler turns and charges his dreadnought with one arm. We don't damage each other, but we're locked in combat.

His turn 6: He shoots everything at the last 4 marines and some rhinos. He kills the marines and immobilizes or wrecks every rhino, claiming the secondary objective. My defiler breaks his dreadnought apart like a toy and stands triumphant, alive and barely scratched at the end of the game.

I realized when he shot them I'd forgotten about the last 4 marines. Since it won't affect his score at all, but will give me a Bonus Point because it's something I forgot, I ask him if I can take a potshot at his dreadnought with both arms with the last 4 members of my melta CSM squad to see if I can get myself that point. He graciously allows it, but they miss.

If my princes would just pass saves, I might survive a round of shooting with at least one in decent condition. I'm usually happy when people aim heavy weapons at my princes - they should soak a lot, and that's stuff not going at my tanks. But if they don't live past one UNIT'S shots, they won't absorb anything at all! Difficult terrain hurt me here, as did the prince failing his lash. Still though, only 3 scoring models held his objective. Very close to that being a tie, there! I made Will think hard about his moves [and about how he angered god, and when, to roll so many 2's on the damage table after penetrating my defilers], and we both had a lot of fun.

So I didn't place at the tournament, but I got best Sportsman! Apparently everyone really enjoyed their games with me, which is nice to hear. I got a finecast hive tyrant and a tyranid codex [cuz the only way to win with tyranids is to win best sportsman they said, hur hurr], and the door prizes for the tournament are 2 sets of GF9 universal multi-templates. Pretty cool!
