He Guy's,

Want to start with Malifaux so I need a rule book

Does the small one do the job?

Or do I need the bigger one?

I downloaded the free book but I dont like the way they cut everything up.....

Small one has the current rules, but no fluff or model stats

The two big books have semi-outdated rules, model stats, and all the fluff.

There's also a slightly cumbersome rules pdf file you can download off the Wyrd site.

But the miniatures have statcards when you buy them?
Or are those free downloadable?

Yep, the miniatures all come with Stat cards. For now, buy the models you want and the mini rulebook--you will be up and playing the game, fully, nothing else needed.

Later, if you want the fluff and want to browse other model's stats, get books 1 & 2.

And if you're saying to yourself, "But I won't know what I'm getting until I buy it!" Just go to Wyrd's forums, or post here about what you want, and we'll tell you all about it so you're an informed consumer!

Don't forget you'll need a Fate deck. Well a deck of playing cards will work if you want to make the game as cheap as possible but will require more looking up conversion charts to know what each card means (especially when casting spells/triggers!)

I bought the bigger rulebook, for the fluff and also to see the models/factions to have a nosey at what was available. It wasn't necessary but I was happy to pay for it.

Yeah, the Fate Deck is nice, especially while learning the game, but it's not needed if your budget is super-tight. You'll look things up more, but once you get the hang of it, it'll be no problem.

Couldn't agree more. Now I just need to get the Rising Powers book.

What? No Retribution ranking track?
