I have a question about these. The book says you can keep rolling to hit until you a lance misses or you get 3 hits.
So if I'm rolling 2 dice for a typical pulsar lance, and I roll one hit and one miss, do I get to keep rolling?

for each Lance that hits, roll another dice. if this hits, roll another dice. weather this hits or misses, its the last. you can't get more then 3 hits this way.
so each lance a ship has to fire can potentially do 3 hits total.

So indeed dice by dice.
On Lock On all misses may be re-rolled (once).
Example, Hemlock on Lock On shoots:
roll 1 = 3 (miss)
reroll = 5 (hit)
roll 2 = 2 (miss)
reroll = 6 (hit)
roll 3 = 2 (miss)
reroll = 4 (hit
If a reroll fails (not a 4+) the pulsar stops.

Because hits beget hits Lock On is essential for Eldar lance vessels.
Fortunately Hemlocks need do little else, excepting Brace For Impact.
Hellebores are too unfocused because they have torpedoes also.

correct.
this is why no eldar ship has more then 2 lances. it would be extremely overpowered.

But there are Eldar ships with more than two lances. The Void Stalker and Dragonship have 4 and 3 respectively. I do not think that they are overpowered.
Also remember, to lock on you cannot make ANY turns. This limits its use on many Eldar vessels, as the guns only fire in the front arc.

hmm, missed those.
still, those are Battleships.
Imperial or chaos battleships can have upwards of 8 lances.

So you're saying an eldar lance rolling 2 dice can generate up to 6 hits? 3 per die?

Although, to be fair, you are looking at more like 3-4 hits on average.

Thats not the worst of it, forward facing guns means they will be closing.

Officially allowed Eldar cheese (msm bogus):
Lock on Hemlocks.
Move-Fire
Hava a Nightshade fire torpedo at Hemlock
Brace Hemlock in ordnance phase
Hopefully targetted Hemlock survives (holo 2+).
Braced Hemlock is not lock on
Thus Hemlock may turn and move away in the ordnance movement of Eldar ship.
Yes, official Eldar rules are crappy. lolz

Never saw that one, very naughty. I personally woundlt allow it, torps move in the ordnacne phase, as is the second (direct forward) Eldar movment for locked on Eldar. I would permit the brace, but as the Hemlock is moving simultaneuosly with the torpedo it will still be under the same movement restriction; i.e. while moving directly forward the Hemlock braces.
I much prefer a non-cheaty alternative. If you begin your attack run close enough move to point blank range and fire then continue moving past the target, not ideal, but at least you are a target moving away, and that ought to be able to clear the 15cm band. Also you need to account for target explosions. However the better option is: only Lock On if you have sufficient firepower to annihilate the target, which is something Eldar can easily do with combined fire. So long as you are only closing to destroyed or braced and criplpled targets you can afford to be closing. In a general mix up its difficult not to have opponents in two connecting fire arcs, a decent opponent will try to guarantee that.

I'm not sure if that trick can be pulled off with the Hemlock. If you look at the FAQ from 2010, in the Brace for Impact spot, it says this... "Brace For Impact REPLACES whatever special order the ship or squadron may currently be on. However, the special order previously in effect remains so, in that ships that reloaded ordnance are still reloaded, a ship or squadron moving All Ahead Full must continue to do so, etc. " So if I understood that correctly, the effect of Lock On would still remain in effect, which I could very well be wrong.
