Ferocious Blood Claw

So I recently picked up Dragon Age Origins, and I am enjoying it so far, but I keep getting the feeling that I am missing something. I will get to a new area, take some quests, and go out to the local forest or killing ground. (Currently I am in the Braecilian Forest, the first place I went after the refuge camp) My problem is, I will stroll through most of the fights. I can crush most enemies. But about every third fight or so, I get into a fight that I either lose, or just barely walk away from with only one health potion left. I am down in the werewolf camp, and I just barely survive the encounter with the dragon, and then I have two fights with some spiders, then I get jumped by some 20 skeletons or so. After trying three times, I decided to take a break for the night. The actual question of the thread: Am I doing something wrong or is this game just really hard? If I was messing up, it would be a lot easier to bring myself to keep trying till I got it right, rather than just getting frustrated and moving on to a different game.

First of all, what difficulty are you playing on?
Second of all, who are you using and what roles do you have them playing as?

I've never feared Death or Dying. I've only feared never Trying. |

My current difficult is normal. My party is Alistar as a defender, Sten as I think a scrapper, and Morgana, as control or debilitating or something like that. I am a two weapon rogue.

Your first problem is leaving them on their own Tactics, you want to set those up manually for basic things like "Sheild Bash enemy attacking Morgana". Also, even if you don't want her to be a healer, get Morgana Heal and set her up with "Heal Target Ally <75%".
Try that, and then come back here with the results

Start a new game as a mage, keep both mage followers in your party at all times, and Alistair as a tank. Dump all your stat points into magic, with a handful going to constitution, and when given the opportunity in a certain mission, deal with the daemon to unlock the blood mage specialization. Use Alistair as an extended mana reserve, and purge everything in a sea of fire.
Shame that Mages are so ridiculously overpowered in game terms, and yet still feel so feeble compared both to their concept and the visual effects that accompany spells. "Yay, that giant exploding ball of exploding fire took a grand 10% off darkspawn redshirt #257's health!"
