Judging by the models alone, the box is worth more that $99, but I really think that $60-$70 is the right price point to help bring new blood into the game.

Being honest, GW is ridiculously overpriced, looking at other miniatures manufacturers and accounting for the fact that AoBR was discounted already, i'd say a good fifty bucks

Mantic's starter set for Kings of War is between $60-70. You get quite a bit in that set. About $60USD seems reasonable.

In Norway, based on todays exchange rate, the black reach box costs about $149 (around 790NOK). Considering how much you get, and how long I (personally) take to paint everything, I think that's on the high end of fair. That's about the amount I can spend on luxuries every two months.

It gets you models, but it's a far cry from what you get in the equivalent box sets. The static poses, limited wargear options, and near total absence of additional bits (not to mention the terrible mold lines - I'm talking entire model halves shifted out of alignment) makes it a bit of an unfair comparison.
The point of a starter set is to bait the hook - it needs to be good enough to tempt new gamers, but cheap enough that they'll bite (probably more along the lines of "the first hit is free, then you pay. And pay, and pay and..."). At the current prices, you'll get a lot more play and product out of some of the more advanced board games, which frequently cost less (sometimes significantly so) and don't require you to spend a lot more money to really experience the game. Seems they've given up on the "gateway drug" model and are relying on the remaining impulse buyers to make up the difference with the high price.
It was fantastic at $60. $80 is a bit high, but the way things have been going, I wouldn't grumble too much. $100 is damn near offensive.

Ouch. It looks as though you're in one of those 'getting ripped off' areas of the worlds, since the set should be 554 NOK.

When I bought it, it was $60. It was my first 40K purchase, and I wanted to decide if I liked it first.
It's current, laughable price of $100 kind of missed the whole point of what a starter set is supposed to be, although I guess it does ram home the point right from the start that the HHHobby is ridiculously priced and it only gets worse from here.
While you do get a nice value for veteran players for what comes in, that's again missing the point. It should be $60 still, IMO, the same price as a PS3 or 360 game.

IMO starter sets should be loss leaders whose intent is to get people hooked on the rest of the (more expensive) product line. Lets face it... minis gaming is competing with an ever more complex and realistic looking and immersive electronic gaming experience. Back in the days where pac man and asteroids were state of the art, painted minis had a huge lead in the emersive and visually impressive gaming race. Nowadays, its the opposite. If minis companies want to compete successfully with electronic games, the buy-in for a specific game needs to be the same. Starter sets over $60 (the average US video game price for a modern console) are a bad idea IMO.

If GW's target audience is 13-15 year olds, I think the $50-$60 dollar range (although up to $70 would possibly fit). As it is right now, I can't see it selling nearly as well at the $100 mark. Don't care what it converts to if you break down its components; you want to bring in new players and I'm just not seeing that, to be honest.

You guys have it all wrong, the target audience for 40K is anybody with a hundred dollars to try a game, and many more dollars to keep at it. Keep a starter cheap? That's for those bad companies.
In all realness though, i think 80 is a fine price, each player pays less than a video game and gets a good deal.

realistically GW should recognize that even if they lose money on the starter set that its still gonna draw people into the game and eventually get the to buy other models which GW can make money on. I remember when AoBR costed only $75 and that's what got me into the game. At $99 dollars now it probably would get to that point mentally where I couldnt justify buying it and I think others would agree.

Hmmm...about $60-$70. That would be $30-$35 per person. Its not to overly expensive but it should cover the cost of production. I look at Black Reach as a device to get people into the game. So it needs to be cheap enough to be attractive for 2 friends but not so cheap that they lose money on it (because then prices get raised elsewhere.)

Agreed for the most part. I am a fan of the marines from AoBR with the exception of the terminator's lack of options. The starter box is a great value, however, and I do not see the price dropping much. Not only is it a good value, but if the price is lowered much below $80 GW will take too much of a loss for two reasons. First, the boxes will begin to be viewed as a cheap battleforce box for marines or orks. Second, and most importantly, people will scream for the Isle of Blood set to come down in price (added to the fact that the pricing will most likely be done the same for both games' starter boxes), and then you have GW taking huge losses simply because people will not buy the rulebooks. For example, the BRB is $75 and the BGB is $60. If the prices for the starter sets are lowered to, say $80, GW will then be giving away plastic, as the small rule books are freaking awesome.

$25 for a 500pts army is insanity. If you wanted to field a 500pts army you would need to spend around $100. This is discounting the fact that it comes with a rules book and templates and dice for next to nothing. I recently got into WFB and instead of buying a rules book, I bought IoB, because it came with free models.
For the AoBR I bought 5 of them at the $60 price. I wish I had bought more. $75 is still a tremendous bargain. I'd put the starter set to $100 with it's value being closer to $175.

I wonder if this is exactly what the rumored "2 different starter boxes" is targeted at, if they split the box and and re target it back to say 50-60 it would lower the entry price....while actually most likely raising the price considering what you would get.
