For all of you who don't know, Space Marine is getting an open (public) beta over Steam on Tuesday August 23rd. People who preordered on steam got it a couple of days ago, and that group of people included me.

I had such a good time playing the 2 demo levels that I took a bunch of screenshots and uploaded them to my steam account. Take a look here:

http://steamcommunity.com/id/j0shh/screenshots/?tab=all&showdate=1&filter=app_55410

From a 40K fan's point of view, and from a gamer's, this game is going to be awesome. If this is really Relic's first shooter, they did a damn good job of it.

Gamer's view:
* Controls for PC are excellent - especially the jump pack controls.
* Graphics are amazing.
* Runs smoothly and plays very nicely.
* Good setting of difficulty levels - easy is easy, normal is slightly challenging and hard is very tough. Nobz on Hard are a death sentence unless you know what you're doing.

40K Nerd's view:
* Stays mostly true to Marine fluff - Captain Titus is a badass. Bolters shoot .75 caliber RPG rounds. Blood and guts everywhere. The pwered armour handles like one would think - a little clumsy but still agile enough to roll and swing a chainsword.
* Orks are hilarious - occaisonally you'll get one that runs up to you and shouts in your face - before you hack him to bits with a chainsword.
* General atmosphere feels very grimdark.

I hope a lot of you dakkaites are getting this game, it would be great to have a huge playerbase so this game doesn't get swamped by Gears of War 3 and MW3.

I was going to pre-order it on steam however the link is broken in Retribution :( just sends you to the store front

I really wanted to have a better machine in home... but the game will probably not run here... But hey, the game LOOKs very good (and the ideia is awsome).

I jut wish they stick with non-marine games for whyle in future... Like i said another time, there would be very fun to have a game like "Gorka Morka Truck Racers" (mario kart meets carmagedon who meets 40k scenario). Im sure it could be great for consoles, and would bring a lot of new fans to the miniauture game (specially greenskins )

If my post show some BAD spelling issues, please forgive-me, english is not my natural language, and i never received formal education on it...
My take on Demiurgs (enjoy the reading):

Please, if you think im wrong, correct me (i will try to take it constructively).

Just search it from the Store menu. Much easier. And yeah, whenever I click a link to it, it always redirects to the main menu for some reason.

Just a correction: It's a demo, not a beta.

Hmm just done a search for it and just came back with the DoW games, tried searching all Relic and THQ games and still dosnt appear. Wonder if the EU servers havent been updated with it.

If you're a forum member, the PC demo will be public tomorrow. They haven't said how it works, so I'll assume they'll PM people a code on the forums to use or email forum members.

I'm having some issues running the game for unknown reasons, as I have a computer that exceeds every system requirement twofold. I was able to play despite these (6 minute loadtimes and a stuttering cacophony of sound) and despite those issues, the game is a blast. I've replayed the demo three times, and while it froze up two of those three times, I'm eager to play it again. The game is so damn good that I'm going back to it despite horrible technical problems with my computer. Fortunately, it will be upgraded by the time the game comes out proper.

I hate to ask something so elementary, but have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling your video drivers? Nvidia has a toggle for a clean install.

I'm going to be a pessimist and say that from what I've seen in the demo, I found the melee combat to be a slogfest. The entire process seems to be swing in every direction to build up fury, occasionally stun and execute a random boy for health, and enter fury mode when things become unmanageable or you have to deal with nobz. Maybe I'm spoiled after having just played Arkham Asylum, but I think that the addition of a counter-attack mechanic would have gone a great measure to smooth it up. Though it could also be that only some of the combos were included in the demo and/or different combos are available with different melee weapons.

While I didn't find much originality as far as gameplay goes (except perhaps the jump pack, which was stupid fun), I can accept this as it's coated in 40k-ness, even if it is a smug blue-and-gold 40k-ness. That and I'd been planning on making some war-torn forgeworld terrain and this is practically a gold mine for visual thievery. Returning to my pessimism, though, I preferred the ork voices from DOW2. The nobz in SM sound like they're losing their voice or something when they go waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh!.

Awesome demo, ran perfect on my machine.

They did include a whole different keymap, with combos for different weapons in the settings, they had combat knife, chainsword and power axe in the demo, check it out.

I looooove the jump pack, i just went jumping around and killed a bazillion orks.

Also I noticed that at the end when he removes the jump pack, he has his regular backpack underneath, which i thought was odd. Though I am no expert on space marines.

I preordered in Steam a while ago, so I played the demo yesterday. I'm having some sound problems like Brother SRM, but nothing else. The game looks pretty dynamic, and the jump pack is very fun. The graphics are great too, and the control is good enough.

I think I'll definitely enjoy the full release

The most frustrating thing for me was the grenade launcher. For the longest time, I didn't see any reason since the grenades didn't seem to explode. Google said hit "R" to detonate them and it went from "WTF this doesn't work" to making hordes of orks pointless.

Yet to uninstall/reinstall video drivers, but it's a sound issue. My sound stutters like a mother and the longer I play, the more of the game it takes with it. Generally it runs alright and looks fantastic, but the sound stuttering and obscenely long load times (I can't even figure out what's causing those) are a pain.

I'll let you know what I think, even though I'll be playing on my PC instead of my 360.

What do your background tasks look like? I have a metric ton of crap running in the background on my lappy, and it eats up a lot of processor power. Before I play any game for extended periods, I always try to shut down as many of them as possible to avoid my HDD overheating.

That might be a problem with the load times. Mine are typically about 15-20 seconds. Running everything on high, 1920x1080. I have an i7, though. Maybe a bit overkill but some of my engineering software needs it.

I have the sound issue also and it made the game totally unplayable. I would update your sound card drivers as I plan on doing to see if that fixes it. If you're playing on a desktop you wont have really any of the overheating problems that are common on laptops (Unless you have a horribly built desktop)

Long load times can be a result of poor optimization on the program end or again more driver issues. Alternatively it could be your own hardware but really if other games run fine that's unlikely. (Im sorta assuming you have enough space, ram and processor power available to run the game.. if you dont well thats on you). Also the term long load time is sorta subjective

The Imperium of Man is able to traverse the Warp with difficulty when their Emperor concentrates from his golden life support machine and lights the way. Unfortunately, because the Emperor has the attention span of the average 5-year-old Pokemon fanboy, this means that many an unfortunate Imperial ship has had the WTF WHERE'D THE LIGHTS GO experience, which in the Warp is invariably fatal.

I'm assuming since the demo just has you plowing through hordes of Boyz and 3 Nobz that combat gets more difficult as you face fewer but more elite opponents like MANz/Chaos.

But I do agree that with no block or counterattack options the combat will have trouble getting more difficult than chop + shoulder roll + chop.

And I don't really care! I love firing the bolter. It makes a flat door-slamming sound like what Abnett always describes and does a satisfying amount of damage on a kill--especially the Stalker pattern boltgun, blowing the arms off of Orks is totally Grimdark.
