I've just picked up a nice group of Aleph models from Maelstrom Games (love that free international shipping!). Some of my gaming friends have picked up the game and loved it so I'm going to give it a try. This is my first post in this section of the forums so I wanted to introduce myself to everyone and hopefully we'll have some good conversations and I'll be able to learn about the game from the experts.
Any advice for a beginner to the system that's just had his first read through of the rules? Thanks so much.

Same advice I give everyone is start small. Play a few 100-150 pt games and screw up the basic rules a bunch to get clarification on the basic stuff. A common mistake is jumping in knee deep to all the rules and getting overwhelmed by everything.
Olso just a heads up that Dakini are some of the hardest models to put together, so endure.

Completely agree with Bluedagger, and I will allow myself to give some quick advice:
- Terrain. This game needs terrain that blocks Line of Fire. Try to have a good battle table with enough terrain to avoid having an sniper having LOF to the whole table.
- Deployment. Remember that all your miniatures can react to any enemy action when they have LOF with the acting miniature. Also, remeber that your miniatures will have 180ยบ vision angle. Try to avoid blind spots in your deployment area.
Why avoiding blindspots? because in this game on eplayer can spend all his action in just one single miniature, If he sees a breach in your defense he will enter in your deployment zone and make a massacre.
Look at this image.
- "E" Is correctly positioned for making reaction shots if an enemy tries to advance through the right side of the building with the ship on the roof.
- "C" is correctly postioned for making reaction shots with a huge portion of the table. "C" should be a sniper.
- "D is the best position for a medic if the sniper suffers a wound. Just spend an order and he can be back on track again.
- If "A" is a Tactbot Dakini, is badly deployed. It does not have LOF with the attacker "2", and it does not have cover against him. "2" will advance, take cover with the buikding, attack "A" and probably have advantage against it.
Thanks for the advice both of you. The ideas about cover and deployment are great to consider. I really like that Infinity seems to be a very tactical game. I think the advice about the smaller games is spot on too. I can see myself rushing out to a big game and being completely bogged down and miserable trying to remember all the rules.

Two more bits on terrain:
- Treat you terrain like a multiplayer level of a First Person Shooter video game. They often have the same goal, balance for all kinds of weaponry.
- Look at Bobba's posted pic and remember that those streets will be death traps, cars and containers at least knee height wil give players tactical locations to duck prone or use as cover and stay alive.

I've downloaded the rules and read through them once. I'm going to do a couple more read throughs over the next week or so to try and get them to sink in more. Admittedly I bought models randomly based on what I liked the look of and what I thought would be fun to paint. All told it was only like $150 from Maelstrom. I know I'll probably need to optimise my list by adding a few more models but honestly I am so refreshed by the cost. I normally do fw augmented games workshop armies that run me $800-$1,200 before all is said and done.
1x Achilles
1x Asura
1x Marut
1x Myrmidons set (how could achilles not have myrmidons?)
1x Naga
1x Naga hacker
1x Sophotect
1x Aleph Starter pack

Yeah, standard force for 300 points is around 8-10 models. In fact, the most you can fit in a single detachment is 10 models. And generally only 'horde' armies will have more than a single detachment.
Achilles, that little bastard jsut won't die half the time lol. Asuras are my personal fav of the Aleph choices. 5 ARM, 2 WO, No Wound Incom, Spitfire, AND Multi Visor 3... oh hell yes please.

Yeah I'm aware that I probably just overshot the moon on the number of minis but this way I can try a variety of lists. Most importantly I love the models so painting them will be a real pleasure, especially after the hundreds of suits of power armor I've painted over the years for GW models. I just hate the idea of playing the same list indefinitely, even if it's the "optimized" one.

Yes there is nothing at all wrong with having a lot of redundancy with your model collection. One of the beauties of Infinity is the sheer variety in different ways you can play, and different strengths you can aim for your in the game. If you have an opponent who has a similarly sized collection, no 2 games need ever be the same.
I agree with you completely about the painting side of things. I was in a similar situation before, and new projects (be it 40k or WFB) gave me the feeling of being stood at the foot of a mountain. It had become a chore. Nowadays I actually relish the opportunity to be able to dedicate some time to each model, and then know I'm not going to have to paint another 20 of the same sculpt. It's great
The best thing about Infinity's factions is that not only does each faction have a lot of different (lovely) models, but each faction can generally approach each play style successfully, simply with a different approach (and before you say Ariadna can't hack, remember, that's what the claymore is for). It adds a lot more openness to the game, and allows you much more freedom to army design, as opposed to GW's much more rigid army design, which forces you to centre yourself around various archetypes to be successful.

Completely agree. I have done Nomad CC Impetuous lists, Sniper Lists, all camo lists, Remote Lists, TAG lists... really I can count about 3-4 times I've actually played the same list twice lol.

Welcome indeed. I endorse everything everyone said on this thread so far. It's a great, dynamic, flexible game. I'd drop 40k and WFB to just play Infinity and FoW if I could.
One day my LGS will have enough players for me to do this... one day...
The number of players was my biggest concern but since I have a few friends who play I think it will be fine. If not I can always buy a second army to loan out to people who are willing to learn.

I've already gotten a bunch of people interested in the game due to the strength of the miniatures and rules.
That said, it takes someone to introduce it though, since the rules really need someone who understands them well to demo them properly. When Infinity first came out I pretty much trashed the game due to frustrations with figuring out the rules.
How I got my group interested was I printed out sheets showing the Getting Started sample armies they show on the website and showed them around the store. This does many good things for trying to get the game started. First it shows off the awesome miniatures, then it shows off what a full army is, then it shows the average price of the army, then finally it has reference numbers (sadly, some are out of date now).
This got people interested enough to try the rules, which they usually enjoyed.
Yes, the rules are very involved and believe me I won't be teaching anyone anything for quite awhile. My order is still processing with maelstrom because a couple of the things I ordered were out of stock. Hopefully it will ship soon. I'm so excited!

As a newbie to the game, her's the first painful esson I encountered: If you take cheap troops to raise your order pool and then plan on hiding them, be very careful about how you do so. An 11-point Yuan Yuan with combat drop (or a Hassasin Fiday, or or or) can take out two or three of those little guys, which can really hobble your game. I'm still figuring out how to deal with that, but deploying them in decent cover, having at least one model watching the backfield (which means facing away from the rest of the field) and choosing a remote with total reaction (everyone has one) if possible.
Single nastiest lesson I've had to learn so far, and I'm still trying to figure it out.
In other news, glad to see the Infinity player base growing even further on Dakka!
Infinity: Way, way better than 40K and more affordable to boot!

Impersonators are largely considered one of the hardest things to take down. If you know you will be going first then create a suppression fire criss-cross to block a path from the Fiday to approach you then try to discover the hell outta him. If you know you will be going second then keep that key model off the board till he places his Impersonator. If there is Salidin screwing with your reserve of multiple impersonators, well that is based alot on the situation so get creative.
@ the demo video - It's a good first step. Lots of background noise, but I like his enthusiasm.

Saladin isn't available in either sectorial list, and you can only take one Fiday in a normal Haq list, so it's not that bad.
Cause if I could field two Fidays with my Saladin, You could bet your ass that I would.
Actually you can, a generic Haqq list has access to a Fiday and Ahbdel Hussein, the Fiday character. Unless you have something against playing characters, of course.
That is a fantastic vid for new players to watch. Only errors I saw were not rolling to climb for the most part, other then that it's a flawless example of the game's start.

@ BobbaFett: These have been very helpful. Thanks so much. In repayment for your assistance I'll happily keep an eye out for Han Solo. I hear he's on Bespin.
