Ahoy there, everyone!
I thought it was finally time to swallow my pride and start posting my creations here on Dakka Dakka. Partially because I think it'll get me more feedback than my little blog.
Fair warning, I know my painting skills are "tabletop" at best, and that's often a stretch.
Let's start at the beginning, shall we?
I started as many
40k players do, with the two-player starter set. I fell in love with the Space Marines. Sure, I didn't really care for all the fluff behind them, but they looked cool! I read through the codex, played a few games (and lost every time), and then started buying anything that went with my "make sure it's cool" mantra, without giving much through to force organization or strategy. Bigger guns are better, right? No, wait, that's the orky way.
I wound up with a few troops, a couple generic
HQs, some speeders, rhinos, one single bike, and way too many terminators and dreadnoughts. Plus a bunch of other stuff from other armies that I'm currently trying to get rid of...
Fast forward to earlier this year. I decided that
GW's had enough of my money and I need to decide what the feth I want to do with my army before I buy anything else. I later decided that
GW had not had enough of my money, but that's a different story.
Okay. I like big guns. And I have a load of terminators and dreadnoughts. Why not make a Dark Angel army? I certainly had enough for it... or so I thought. A couple boxes of termies later, and I have a full 1500 of terminators planed out to go onto the battlefield. Yes, 1500 of nothing but terminators. No vehicles, no grunt troops. Just heavy armor, baby!
Okay, now all that said, the one thing a Deathwing army needs is Belial. Otherwise, you're kinda stuck. I got to work with my termie bits and my
DA bits and whipped up this guy:
Pretty standard stuff, and I'm rather pleased at how the power sword turned out.
Side note: I have this thing about using the names of demons, as Belial definitely is. Doesn't help that every time I said 'Belial' as I was working on him, something bad happened. Like arms breaking off and falling into pots of paint. So, I'm renaming my main
HQs to have more angelic names. I'm making him "Seriphius", master of the seraphim. It's working for me so far.
Okay, now he looks okay, right? But he looks like he could be any old
Deathwing Seraphim sergeant. I want something EPIC for my epic hero!
SO! When I was bored one day, I pulled out my book of graph paper (as I didn't have my sketchbooks around) and whipped up this:
There we go! This looks more like a Dark Angel bad-arse! Robes, angel wings and lightning claws... Plus, using that nifty little technique of using Dreadnought leg plates for shoulder pads. It'd be awesome!
Well, there aren't exactly any official robed termie legs, so I was stuck making my own... So I busted out my big roll of green stuff and got to work!
I now have a LOT more respect for the people out there that can take green stuff and make it look like... you know... Stuff. I knew what I wanted and I had most of the tools, I just lacked the experience. This is my first time using
GS for anything other than sticking stuff together. Still, he doesn't look THAT far from the concept. Plus, he's perfectly
GW-legal!
AS I moved on and pondered "v3", I kept a few things in mind:
- The robes turned out WAY too dark. Seems I forgot how I did it on my previous robed marines.
- He's not that much taller than a normal marine. Just bigger and bulkier. I want my not-Belial to be towering.
- Those shoulders are okay, but they... they're just Dread legplates and it's pretty easy to tell they're dread legplates.
- No room for wings. This will be tough.
SO! I scoured the internets and made some orders to some compies in Europe and came up with some bits that I thought would be useful...
The shoulders are from
MaxMini and the robed legs are from
Micro Art Sutdios. After seeing a review, I knew the legs were longer than standard termie legs, so they were perfect for what I wanted. I wanted a towering BAMF that people would either run screaming from... or concentrate all their fire upon.
Here's a comparison shot of the sizes:
So far, this was the beginnings of my not-Deathwing army. More units to follow shortly.
C&C welcome!!
