Hello Comrades of dakkadakka!

I'd like to introduce myself, since no one really knows me in these parts beyond my few posts here and there. I am Molotovsoda, graphic designer and web designer extraordinaire. I have quite a few 40k related projects but I'd love to post some of my random musings! so let me show you whats on the chopping block! oh yeah, I'm also a local commission painter so that gives me some fun stuff to post here!

- Penal legion kill team with a converted chimera (sold)
- (none gaming related) Dragon Skull (on the shelf, might sell if there's offers)
- Kill Team table for my club
- Nid army (selling)
- Imperial guard army (sold)
- Black Templars (WIP)
- Vampire Counts (sold)
- biel tan eldar (wip)

I'll be updating this first post soon with up to date pics of everything some time soon, in all of its HD glory

not too shabby. foamcore is tricky to work as a building material for 40k style ruins without some prep work. Good job.

I could do a tutorial if you'd like? ruins are really simple where as intact buildings require some level of skill and practice...but you can always kinda wing it and mess up nothing like covering up mistakes with rubble and debris and textured paint

That would be handy. (I've worked with foamcore in the past, It's a nice lightweight material, just dings up ALOT easier than the dental stone I've been using, or resins.)

Update Time!

So I just got back from the shop, I was painting my guard slowly and finally caved in and bought a box of jungle fights that are going to be my Penal Legion. I've got a couple painted and i've also begun tearing an old chimera apart to serve as their dedicated transport.

Got to play a casual game of killteam (200pt game) with my penal legion backed by a squad of veterans and they rolled for gunslingers we fought in cities of death over 4 objectives and they did some took out well over their point cost in dark eldar. managing to win the game by holding three objectives on turn 6. We had also played a quick game of 750 pts where it was 1 small platoon, a russ and the super stars of my army penal legion and chimera and they rolled psychopaths and held down a squad of 12 warriors with a lord for a few turns before getting whittled down. Overall my impression is that knife fighters and gunslingers are the ways to go, psychopaths seem a bit more defensive because of their counter attack, if you don't know what the rules are for penal legion its basically:

Roll D6 before game.

1-2 psychopath - furious charge, fleet and counter attack
3-4 gunslingers - turns rapid fire lasguns into assualt 2
5-6 knife fights - rending in close combat

sooooo yeah, lotta fun and im excited to have them done this week I'll be posting more WIP pictures tomorrow when I get a change to finish the squad and start painting their dedicated prision chimera!

Nice, I've always liked the idea of penal legionnaires. You should try modelling your Vet squads (those with shotguns) as Arbites/ penal legion minders.

If I had a dollar for every dollar I spent I'd have all my money back.

Oh they are just so fantastic and it really breaks up the boring foot slogging list. Originally I was going to have them as my themed kill team: 2 squads of penal which is 140pts? 70 a squad and some heavy weapons or something but now i realize how fun they are I want to incorporate them into my normal IG lists. There is just something so awesome about driving a chim into enemy lines turning it around, opening a hatch and releasing a pile of dirty convict psychopaths into someones delicate back field. I'm not sure what Arbites/minders are, if you'd care to eleborate...

they´d be like herders for your penials... the arbites are the "policeforce" in the grim dark... the minis from GW range are used in necromunda...

they have a look of judge dread around them...

ruins and your penials look very cool...the skull...wow...i am waiting how this develops!

cheers, vik

I think that since they are getting pushed into battle out of a prison chimera there wouldn't be any reason to have herders/enforcers, its a do or die situation 9 times out of 10. Seeing as how those aren't the most recent pictures of my dragon here is a more recent update on him:

cool lighting effect^^ and i really like those horns!

but i gotta ask, is this more s stony skull or a bony skull? if the latter then i´d add a bit of brown/bonish color to the mix...

and well if they only get tossed out i guess you are set quite good already

This was a picture right before it went to a local gallery for a fund raiser. After this I had sanded most of the paint/rough crappy texture off of it and its back in the workshop. My plans for it are to flock it with sand like a terrain piece, spray it with army painter bone color and ink wash it with black arcrlic paint watered down very much and than do a quick touch of white drybrush and highlights. I also intend on installing a dry ice tray for fog effect to go with his LED lit mouth and eyes and lastly I'll bolt on the jaw annnd that should be it for the dragon

Dear Diary,

Today I primed my penal themed chimera and I plan on painting it a little bit before I go to bed. Also today I smothered one of my terrian pieces in water effects mixed with water, gonna take 30 years to dry but it should look okie, yup thats all for now

Hey all, I'll be posting pictures tomorrow either before or after class of penal legion, some army shots, my tanks and my storm troopers. BUT my circle of friends are putting together a learning/escalation weekly campaign thats going to be based around city fight I nominated myself to be in charge of lazy graphic design and map design for the whole shindig so heres the teaser pic, lemme know if we can come up with a better name, i just kinda random name generator'd it:

the pic looks very good... title has also a good ring to it...

the only thing i would reconsider is the subtitle...

a few thousand good men...better make that: all good men...

that way it sounds not too sneering at wasting lifes...they end up dying anyways but thats not really something to look forward to when looking at a recruiting poster...which in essence it is ...

Really digging the chimeras. Gives that vibe of them being the bottom group on resupply list, forcing them to just patch up vehicles that have been wrecked several times over.

How'd you do those bullet holes on the side?

If I end up doing a second squad of them (and chances are, I will!) i'll post up a tutorial of how to go about making a penal chimea.

The basic jist of getting those holes is getting a nice sharp box cutter or razor blade.....and cutting the bajesus out of it!

you just push the knife in a little bit, angle it at about 45* and start twisting it around in a circular motion being very brute and uncaring for the most part (its battle damage) just cut chunks out randomly put holes in a row to make it look like its a stream of bullet holes.

once you've accomplished destroying your tank you leave it as a last detail, paint the rest of your tank first and come back to the battle damage, i find its easier to do it last. brush the hole and stipple the surrounding area with black and do a dry brush of bolt gun metal to give that burnt off metallic look, its hard to put into words but I may do a video series on it or a photo tutorial in the near future.

Thank you very much for your comment, I feed off peoples attention

Really liking the wooden boards on the front of the chimera. also, the orange uniforms make 'em look like prison inmates, giving them the criminal look

we were thinking about casting our own space hulk/ sci fi corridors in plaster for a table only to realize hirstarts.com makes molds that are super modular and generally awesome. I'll post pictures of the prototype in a minute

That would not have made a good mold. The wall would be OK, but the buttresses and flooring have too many undercuts to cast well. as a scratchbuilt section of corridor it would be fine, also It would make for a very nice scenic element.

the buttresses were either going to be the GW ones or we would cast our own. the idea was to have the floor&walkway be one cast, the wall and trim to be another and the butressess be one, followed by the doorway, and finally a mold for the door itself. at that point we would have enough corridor pieces and we could decorate each one differently before painting so they wouldn't all look exactly alike. at least that was the idea
