It's actually four thin layers for the red - I think I was expecting it to layer better and I put it on too thick initially first and then had to paint several watered down and drybrushed layers to try to salvage it, lessen learned. I'll see how the next model turns out.
I think the drabness of the red is cause the only highlight is a drybrush of blazing orange on the thigh, back, crown of the helmet, etc. I didn't know how it would end up so I started conversative. I need to bring the helmet and chest out more - perhaps darker chains and define when the surfaces change.
I was considering picking up Tau Sept Ochre to paint the base (it will be flocked as a rocky desert) and to dirty up my rhino treads.
Ideas for highlights would be welcome, and I'll keep the pictures coming as I make progress.
One last edit - I did wash the foundation for the crevices, but I didn't want to dull the metallics or red. I think if I focus my efforts on highlighting the red I'll get a similar effect and the metallics won't have to serve as the only accent.
