Hello Dakka,

Are the LoTR Journeybooks worth using? They are kind of pricey, so I wanted to see if they are worth the investment.

Thanks!

Depends what you want to do. The journeybooks are used to do smaller scenarios. If you want to play standard games, I recommend the legions of middle earth book as a first port of call, and then finding out which expansions have the rules for the miniatures you want to use.
LOTR follows a release schedule that is more like how Historical games do it.

My sons and I would like to play the "movie" so it sounds like the JB would be what we want. Are they compatible with the regular rule set and would the MoM starter set be a good place to starter since you get the Fellowship and rules?

Okay, cool. If you want to play "to the movies" then the Journey books are definitely the way to go- loads of stuff inspired by the movies and the books in them, each sequence is turned into a scenario, including scenarios that happen "off camera" like the battles of the fords of the Isen and so on.

They are compatible with the regular rules and the MoM starter is a decent way to get started, though some of the scenarios have very specific model requirements- many require a Ringwraith or 4 for the fellowship of the ring book, for example. And the Two Towers book requires a lot of Uruk Hai.

The Fellowship of the Ring journey-book arrived today. 18 scenarios that all look very interesting. I've had to order a few things to get started but I can't wait to try this.

Awesome! I'm pleased you found the right source book for your needs- the LOTR skirmish game is piles of fun. Hope you and your sons have a good time
