Obligatory introduction. College student, work, wanted to start tabletop games, bought Warmachine, liked it, now am planning on starting 40k. Anyone have any tips before picking an army?

Advice- yes. Watch what other people are playing and see what you are naturally inclined to. Play a few games w/ the army you are interested in (even if you wind up playing every miniature as proxy, such as Space marines "counts as" Tau or whatnot). Once you are certain that you have found the force that strategically draws you and aesthetically pleases you, pull out your wallet and bleed it dry- but not as dry as you would have had you not researched and investigated your options first.

I would suggest starting with marines of somesort probably vanilla marines. They are easy to play and paint. Just buy assault on black reach and go from there. Have fun

When I chose my first army I read a little fluff, went to stores and online sights to see the models. And saw how people played which army. Also checked my own creative nature and thought which army I could make the way I wanted it.

I chose Chaos, then got great deals on marines, and found scouts to be super fluffy.

Interesting that you're going from WM to 40k! I am trying a bit of the opposite (from fantasy to Hordes). I think you'll enjoy both, though... I certainly do

just walk into a gw store.. look at the codexes.. and pick the coolest one.. then read read read the codex very carefully, do some resaerch on the army , make a army list of 1000 pts you think is a good one.. share the list and adjust if necesarry.. than buy models and paint.. don't buy modles first.. bad idea.. ^^ i can know.. i bought my models first.. and now i don't use 1/4 ever in a battle..

Play and army you will appreciate the style of visually and to match you level of agression.

For example if you like to sit back and shoot, don't play khorne berzerker army.

I already picked out Orks. They seem more of a fun race to play as, simply because they aren't so serious.
