Where Cool Kids Fear To Tread

Hey all. Just impulsively bought an army so now I guess i need to start learning how to play and paint.

Gonna go check out some WA Games Workshops later today or tomorrow.

Read a few of the books when I was a kid and been semi familiar with Warhammer and 40k universe just from gaming and whatnot. Stuck shopping after christmas so while they went and looked at scarfs and handbags i wandered into a Games Workshop and watched a fantasy battle beastmen vs chaos, spent all night digging through the internet and when i woke up i just HAD to buy something lol.

Anyway any tips for a beginner?

Welcome!

What wargame are you actually going for, 40k or fantasy?

I would suggest a more beginner army like space marines or orks for 40k but whatever suits you, find out if you like a shooty army or a real CC based army, and develop from there would be my suggestion.

For Fantasy, well I dont know much if anything about it, but Dwarfs or Orcs and Goblins seem like a decent beginner choice, but you would probably be better getting advice elsewhere for that.

I would say the best way to learn stats and rules other than playing the armies themselves is to spectate a few games and maybe read some of the army books and codices.

Welcome, new person! I too no longer play video games. Strangely enough this is actually saved me a lot of money in the long-run (don't have to pay 1500 USD every 4-6 years to build a new gaming rig and don't have to pay 60+ per game or the $15 monthly fee for MMOs).

Plus no I can actually interact with other gamers (GASP!!!) and go drinking at the bars with them afterwards.

anyway whats a good way to get more familiar with other armies units and special rules and stats?

Well the main rulebook has some stats listed, but the best way is to get a hold of a codex (or borrow one) and read through each of them a couple of times.

Checking out the forums here or else where (librarium-online.com is best IMO) or some gaming blogs (yesthetruthhurts.com or theback40k.com are two examples, but there are many more out there).

Or you can just PM us here too. I only play two of the armies, but I own (or have read several times) each of the codicies and am a fairly competitive player (usually end up in the top 4 or 5 in tournaments I attend).

obviously playing them but id like some idea of who to shoot first when i play lol.

EDIT: For beginner tips I'd say get the rulebook and the codex of your choice first (the Black Reach rulebook is on ebay for about $5 or 10-15 with the templates). Make sure to read them through several times (hell I still re-read sections of the rulebook and find things I've missed).

Play some games with proxy models or borrow a friend/store army to get the mechanics down and learn more about the game. Once you have picked out an army, post a few lists up on the forums (here or librarium-online will get you the best quality replies) before buying a bunch of models.

Welcome to Dakka!

It seems like currently the best way to start Warhammer Fantasy is to pick up the Island of Blood starter set and a skaven army book. You have a playable army right out of the box, and you also get all the dice and the main rulebook which usually costs $90 Canadian!

Thanks all.

Yeah I did a little general browsing and reading and decided to start a CSM army. It seems to fit me best playstyle wise, theres the whole Marines thing (Rrrrrah), and as a bonus I get little snarling demons and bloated puss-filled monstrosities to put on the shelf and piss off the gf.

With some theorycrafting and help from browsing some lists on here I put together a list that I hope will be effective and fun

Then this morning I bought (secondhand) an army that had some of the models I wanted, it seemed like a better way to my goals than a starter set. Problem is that leaves me a week till it gets here and I also need to go get the required dice books etc. Hopefully I can do that tomorrow!

Welcome to Dakka! Read that you're looking at a CSM army. If you have any questions about force composition, painting advice, modeling, conversions, etc drop me a line. My #1 advice right off is build a "vanilla" force that doesn't carry a Mark per se (like Death Guard, World Eaters, etc). Main reason is that 6th Ed 40K is (rumored to be) right around the corner and you don't want to invest into something that is suddenly obsolete or nerfed into uselessness.

Welcome to the hobby, and congratulations for unhooking yourself from that thrice-damned video-game controller. At least now when you spend 12 hours sitting in the same chair pursuing your hobby you'll actually have something to show for it other than a high score or a level up.

Dude awesome project blog btw..

It's kinda funny tho one of the reasons I chose CSM is cuz I had all these conversion ideas, pretty much most of which are in your blog lol.

Yeah I'm torn, I was going to do a Death Guard army and find some excuse for the Khorne Berzerker squad in it but now I'm considering running Lash Princes. The other issue is I would kind of like to find some variation of traditional color schemes or something original I guess I don't know. Half the Astartes Loyal and Traitor are either Black with trim or Red with trim, seems kinda redundant and I'd like some individuality or uniqueness thrown in there somewhere. Something to stand out ya know?

One thought was Hakanor's Reavers, even though they dont have much history or fluff the lava detailing of the armor would give me an opportunity to do some personalization. Also I like the idea of keeping at least one of the cult troops shoulders with representative colors, like my plague marines would all have a green with brown trim (possible symbol) shoulder and my zerkers would have a red one etc.
