I thought of something while i was in the army list forums the other day.

Lots of bad opinions and suggestions are given out by lots of different people, not necessarily on purpose but due to a lack of experience playing that army successfully themselves.

Not to say these comments are worth anything because often they are helpful but wouldn't it be nice to know that the person whose giving you advice about your army has won tournaments with it or is one of the top ranked players in the world/country?

If OPs knew this then they would know what suggestions are made by experienced and skilled players of that army or experienced and skilled players in general, and what comments are made by players with little qualification to be making them.

E.G Myself. I won best general in a GT with Space Marines (Bikes in Particular) so i like to think my opinion would hold more weight in discussions about Space Marine Bikes in both the Tactics forums and the Army list forums. And while i often play Space Wolves and Tyranids, I am yet to perform amazingly well with them so I don't have any real qualification to be giving out information on them, and for any other armies i am talking out my behind. I feel that Someone else who has won large tournaments those army should have their opinions be given more weight.

If the experienced and/or successful players were given a badge, ranking or qualification based on their proficiency then they would likely feel more inclined to post without thinking their posts would be devalued by the posts of inexperienced players.

Without any great knowledge of programming or the behind the scenes workings of Dakka I am not sure how these qualifications would be shown or given but i can offer some suggestions.

People with high, nation or worldwide rankings for a certain game could be identified through RHQ and the same would work for experienced players of certain races or armies.

The same could be done for Painters and/or Modellers by voluntary submission of photos or videos of their work or proof of competition wins. They could then be given a ranking like Unproven, Experienced or Master for example.

They could be displayed as little graphics/icons or simply

World Ranking-XXXX
National Ranking-XXXX
Speciality-E.G Blood Angels
Modelling Skill-Unproven (If they have decided not to submit any evidence of their work)
Painting Skill-Beginner

Hopefully this would help increase the skill of both the gaming and the modelling/painting community

I also feel like this is a good idea, but it does have some issues that I can see:
1. Where would this badge be located? Signature spaces are unlikely, unless this becomes the next w/l/d counter.
2. This may lead to some form of segregation amongst the digital hallways of Dakka. If a player is looking for advice, they might be more inclined to take said advice from an experienced player and discounting ideas from other sources. A less-experienced player may have a good idea for a tactic that suits the new player's style, which may be overlooked by the new player.

I agree with this in principle, and I'm definitely in favor of this becoming a reality, but I feel that it needs a bit of work before being put into practice.

The badges maybe could be arrayed on the same level as the exalt+1. Friend and Ignore buttons.

And the rankings could maybe be displayed on the left side of the post box under filter thread

I would prefer to continue posting in a community of equals, personally. If you want to let everyone know you won a competition, put it in your signature or something.

In a competition there are no equals (unless you tie).

People posting in the army list section or the tactics section looking for advice are trying to improve their game to win and become BETTER at the game than other people.

Obviously the ideas of newer players shouldn't be discounted but if they plan to compete in a competition then they should put more value in the opinions of players who've proven to be skilled.

HA... I was thinking this as well. I'm exhausted with reading posts filled with amateur drivel.

Dreadnote - It's more about weeding out bad / amateur advice. How can a player and / or hobbyist grow if the information being fed to them is coming from someone with little to no experience of their own? Everyone is free to express their opinion and give their input / advice, but realistically not everyone's advice should be heeded.

I'm thinking that a good way to go about this that would be the most fair would be to implement a system like the Exault+1 button. However, It would work in a manner such that when someone asks a question and answers are posted the individual responses / posts will have a +1 button and subsequent posters can agree with a particular response by clicking the +1 button. As one or more posts receive +1 button clicks it will keep count, gaining recognition as the most excepted / best answer.

LegoBurner... You're welcome. You can take that one to the bank.

So we turn Dakka into DakkaBook?

I have to agree with this. Segregation in this manner will simply lead to additional food for trolls, not to mention the superiority complex it can give to some people. It'd also somewhat be like people basing experience off of post count; some see a number higher and feel the need to fight against them to try and prove themselves as better others take what they say without thinking about it too much. Neither are the right way.

When people post about tactics, I assume they're recounting their own experiences and how that worked out for them. To take it as is without question is stupid.

Also why would the new players who think they are right vote up the responses that they obviously don't agree with.

And if your suggestion was implemented purely in the army list / tactics forums I would have no problem with it, as I could ignore it. However dakka is much bigger than these two forums and your idea would be largely irrelevant in many places.

So? Ignore it in those places. Obviously it wouldn't make that person seem better than you at discussing news and rumours.

That's the design, it's regulated by the majority. All of the logged-in users who read the thread will +1 the response they think is the best. answer. The post(s) that receives the most +1's is accepted by the majority as the best / most correct answer.

I'm not sure I understand this. I assume it's something to do with Facebook. I don't "Facebook".
