Tl;dr

GWs 25th birthday is coming up and they are talking about a big announcement. While announcing the next codex might be a month or so early, it seems like a great opportunity to do so. The BT rumors going around, coupled with the picture at the bottom of the post point to this being a possibility:

http://www.blacklibrary.com/Blog/In_the_grim_Darkness.html

On the 25th of February our beloved Warhammer 40,000 celebrates its 25th birthday, which leaves us thinking, where has the time gone? As we begin our preparations for this momentous occasion, we thought we’d go all the way back to the beginning and see just how far we’ve come.

In 1987, ‘Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader’, contained the first pieces of background about the war torn galaxy of the 41st Millennium and was responsible for introducing the world to Space Marines. Six years later, Ian Watson wrote Space Marine, cementing the reputation of the Adeptus Astartes as the towering, death-dealing, armour clad warriors of the Imperium that we know today. It seems that gene-bred, super-human warriors are everywhere in sci-fi now. Space Marine is an old novel and not exactly up to date with the current view on the Warhammer 40,000 universe, but if you want an insight into what got the ball rolling, check it out here.

The first ever Black Library novel released was Dan Abnett’s First and Only, way back in 1999. In fact, the name of the book was a bit of a joke, as we weren’t sure that it would be popular enough to warrant a second one! Thankfully that wasn’t the case and since then, we’ve released two hundred and seventeen Warhammer 40,000 titles, featuring every race in the game (and more besides) and spanning ten thousand years of war. We thought it would be cool to find out how many words that would be, so we set to work, and after scouring every book, we can confidently say that this makes up a total of seventeen billion, three hundred and sixty thousand, one hundred and three words (give or take a fairly huge amount)!

We mentioned earlier that we were planning something special to mark the birthday. By order of the Inquisition, we can’t tell you much about it at the moment, but we have managed to sneak this preview past the guards. Let us know what you think it might be on our Facebook page.

Join us here on the 25th when we will announce what’s coming out and make sure you bring cake!

They will probably announce 6th Edition.

If you can keep your head, while all about you are losing their's, then you have probably completely misunderstood the situation!

Gathering the Informations.

Or more likely, it's a 25th anniversary novella with multiple contributors.

I would be dissapointed if BT were somehow a focus of the anniversary... You would figure they would choose a chapter al little more representative of the old rt days.

I have an optimistic thought that they may end up showing all of us some love this year

Considering the picture is of a Black Templar marine... I think it's pretty clear they're going to show something about them.

Yep.

At that point, we'll be 2 months off the Necron release date and during all of 5th they've alternated between Marine codexes and non Marine codexes. Seems like it might be the right time? It's certainly a good platform to announce it.

I doubt that Black Library is doing the announcement for a BT codex. More likely, a BT book of some kind.

25 years already. Damn I'm old.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

We mentioned earlier that we were planning something special to mark the birthday.

We being black library. They don't have anything to do with codex releases or previews. And that pic is definitely a Black Library cover, not the codex cover art we are seeing of late.

Now, BL might occasionally forshadow impending releases. That certainly seems to be the case of late (Necron's being a prime example), so its possible a BT book or series of stories could either mean its coming soon or give us a sneak peak at how the codex will work.

Would be cool if zeal bolters are mentioned in a BL story...

Beyond that though, I wouldn't count on anything relevant to the rules or miniature releases.

Iorek: "Snoogums, you're right. Your arguments are irrelevant, and they sure as heck aren't going away."

There may be a tie between a BT Codex (has been rumored) and a Black Library release focusing on Black Templar. Regardless, it's all wild speculation at this point.

For all the Space Marine chapters to herald at your 25th anniversary, BT seem the strangest. Everything about them in unconventional. They don't follow the Codex Astartes, they're always crusading, they don't use Librarians, the mix Scouts in with normal Marines, they use body-wave tactics, they're not even a first-founding chapter.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. There's a lot of artwork that isn't very good, but has more or less 'fallen behind the bookshelf' and could use a reprint. Maybe attach a huge poster with it for fun.

It is a Black Library announcement. So it will be about a BOOK. Nothing to do with the game.

I don't even thing BT should have a codex they are not even a first founding chapter I think we need less armies and not more as to get updates sooner and we surely don't need any more power armor codices than we already have.

I would rather see a raven guard book than a BT if I had to choose. Give Tau a new book or Eldar even nids need a new book because Crudace screwed them up so much he is an IG fan boy.

That BT art looks based on the Emperor's Champion existing miniature. I don't think it's related to new gaming stuff, I guess Kanluwen is right with the anniversary novel thing.

Since this is a Black Library announcement, perhaps it would be better placed in the Black Library news and rumours thread (http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/930/373580.page), and then this thread can be locked to avoid Duplicate Thread Syndrome?
