What are your fav tactics and stratagies to use in LotR? And by that i mean different combinations of units abilities and things. This is also a place to talk about different combos you're thinking of trying and working out with eachothers help if it is worth it or not.
What i want to try is some combo with the golden king of abrakhan. I can imagine his ability can work well with some things. Being able to spend will to alter courage tests has got to have some nasty combos.

Like the idea of this thread! With someone who has only a little battle experiance but a lot of models it would be handy to learn some tactics ( ATM I have none ) and combos of troops

It;s why i thought of it. It;s always fun to share ideas of these sorts
I've been thinking. Does anyone know any heroes or units that have abilities/spells linked to courage tests that are really useful? As they would be good to combo with the golden king. I think Angmar spirits would be good.
If you don;t know The Golden king when your opponent makes a courage test within 12" of him after the roll has been made he can use any amount of will to lower the dice by that amount. What makes it good is you get to pick after they've rolled. So you don't need to waste will if you don't want too. Combo that with a couple abilities that lower courage and you could make the enemy auto fail courage tests for a while.

Lots of things would work well this this. Goblin Drums, which have an 18" inch range, and ringwraiths, which have a 12" range, cause enemy models to suffer a -1 to their courage within range although they aren't cumulative

I think -1 to the average troop is gunna be enough. even most heroes it;s likely to be enough. I'm thinking to cause them to fail terror tests when i want to slam into precious heroes. so it would be -1 from a ringwraith then make em take the test then drop however many will it would take to cause em to fail and run in with the knight of umbar or any really high fight and S hero or monster with terror.

Yeah that would work pretty well. Would help terror causing cav not get charged

yup. Do morgul knights still cause Terror in SBG? Could have the wraith leading the morgul knights, as they have lances too. make the wraith knight of umbar for a decent character killer. Bunch of lances charging into a hero who has just failed his terror test = dead hero.

I just thought of it looking at the rules for The Golden King and thought he had a really great ability and thought there must be ways to abuse it. .. i mean combo it with stuff only for fun reasons -shifty eyes-
Thought terror would be the obvious one. Failing a terror check at a vital point can be a death sentence. Specially when it means a bunch of heavy cavalry with lances can now charge you.

Yeah they still do, terror ain't much in SBG though
I normally use 5 Morgul Knights and either a low level Wraith on horse or the Dark Marshal as a unit of redirectors to shepard the enemy into grinding against my 25 odd morannon orcs.

shame/ Does it not do the reduce Ft value to 1 thing in SBG? if not then my tactic is kinda ruined :( I suppose i could still use it for things like transfix and compel.

Nope, only thing a failed terror does is the model can't move or charge anyone but still acts normally if charged (I think)

So what's the point in a terror causing thing charging something? seems lame.
I'll have to think of something else then.

It's more of defensive quality really, stops things like trolls getting swarmed by about 10 guys, getting trapped and dying for example

Well no, not really. You don't get priority and half his front line fails courage can't charge your Morgul Knights, then your back on track, terror is never lame
Shadowbrand wrote:A true tactician doesn't reveal his ploys.
Ohohohohoh! I see what you did there
Since I have started playing again this is what I have learnt:
No banners or anything similar really needed in less than 250pts. Also nothing more than a captain level should be used.
Coherent infantry blocks are vital
Archers are always, always valuable, take the max with most armies.
Boromir is awesome
Fury is not worth it below 250pts
2/3rds of your might points should be used for heroic moves

I approve of this tread
Here is my standard tactic, I normaly advance my main battleline who manily consist of Easterlings with pike and shield supported by a bow warband. These are commanded by Easterling Captains who I give haleberds. I also normaly have at least one Black Dragon warband.
I also keep a Kataprakt Warband commanded by Amdur on a armourd horse on the flank. But Ialso do keep some tricks a secret due to my devious mind

In the few battles I've played bows haven't really done a lot Maybe I just have unlucky rolls

My tactic playing with elves is *almost* the same every match. Though I wanna try a full melee list (but losing those precious bows) adding some cavalry.
I deploy the shielded high elves, supported by mirkwood guard with bows and spears, and bladespearmen behind them (ghaladrim ones). I'm a turtle, basicly, moving slow and shooting, mainly horses if enemy have them, when in melee, Thranduil casting nature wrath, again, if horses, better on them, and doing heroic movements to prevent units from getting up. The rest is combat, moving bows to a flank or a hill and shooting, or into a forest.
That tactic it's pretty useful on all the maps missions except in the one where you've to conquer points. In killing missions, I usually lost 5 - 7 elves only, and I lost more when the enemy have bows too.
