Warhammer Forge wrote:
Hi there,
In this week’s newsletter we delve deep into the shadowy forests of Bretonnia to bring you the latest release from Monstrous Arcanum, the savage Preyton, which is now available to pre-order. We’ve also got a reminder of our upcoming appearances at Games Days in Spain and North America, for which we are currently accepting reservation orders.
The Preyton
Foolhardy knights of Bretonnia sometimes mistake the savage and hateful Preyton for the noble Great Stags of their land, and will follow this twisted beast, possessed of a dark cunning, into the very deepest parts of the forest. Only there, where there is little chance of escape, will it finally reveal its deadly form, its savage fangs, leonine paws and monstrous wings, and attack the unsuspecting warrior.
While their appearance is truly vile, it is the legendary malice of the Preyton that makes them particularly dangerous. Corpses mauled beyond recognition and tracts of forest befouled and trampled betray their presence, the savage creature often discarding the torn ruin of their victims to rot, killing out of pure hatred rather than hunger.
Little is known of their origins, but dark legend has it that in ages past they were Great Stags who were enslaved and corrupted before sacrifice-strewn herdstones. Now, bereft of their nobility, the Preytons know only an all-encompassing hatred for that which they have lost.
The Preyton is a finely detailed multi-part resin kit designed by Steve Whitehead. Rules to field this savage creature in your games of Warhammer can be found in Monstrous Arcanum, and the kit is available to pre-order now for despatch from Friday 29th June.
Forge World Events News
Games Day Spain and Games Day North America Reservation Orders now being taken
Forge World are hitting the road in July with Games Day season beginning across the globe! Sunday 1st July will see Forge World staff, including designer Mark Bedford, travelling to El Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona for Games Day Spain. Meanwhile, on Saturday 28th July, we’ll be making our way to the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Chicago, IL for Games Day North America. For this event our intrepid team will be joined by writer Alan Bligh and miniatures designer Phil Stutcinskas.
As always we will be bringing a huge selection of our range of resin kits, modelling supplies and books, and we’re now accepting reservation orders for both these events. A reservation order is the best way to ensure that we will have the exact products that you want, packed and waiting for you to collect.
To place a reservation order, please send an e-mail to forgeworld@gwplc.com titled ‘Games Day Spain Reservation’ for Games Day Spain, or ‘Games Day Chicago Reservation’ for Games Day North America. We will require your full name, a contact telephone number and the list of kits you’d like to order. You can also telephone the Forge World customer service team on 011 44 115 900 4995 from the US and Canada or 00 44 115 900 4995 from much of Europe to place a reservation order. We must receive your reservation orders by Monday June 18th for Games Day Spain and Wednesday June 27th for Games Day North America.
In the week before the event we will send you a confirmation e-mail that will contain your order number, details of any items that we will be unable to supply and a total price in either Euros or US Dollars (less local sales tax) that will be payable on the day.
Thanks,
Ead Brown

Maybe it's the paint job that's responsible, but it seems a little... meh, to me. Is it supposed to have leathery skin? It's also a lot smaller than I expected: while this is not necessarily a bad thing, that, coupled with the whole half deer, half deranged chicken thing prevents it from looking all that intimidating to my eyes. Compared with some of the other monsters FW has put out,it's just not that good.

Sadistic Inquisitorial Excruciator
|
Wow, yeah, I am disappoint.
I loved this beast in the book, so maybe that's why im so irritated by the execution here. This sculpt just looks incomplete. Wing texture just looks like scarring with a blade, feathers are not textured, no fur on body... It's like they got to the point of applying tthe final details, and were like, meh, f it. :(
The half arsed paintjob only emphasizes the weaknesses of the sculpt, and is very flat. Painting in some contrasting colors, sketching in fur or feather texture, leaving the wings dark, all could have helped immensely especially for a promo photo paintjob. Le sigh.

I liked it until I saw the wings.
Still, it's better than the Jabberslythe to which it bears a remote passing resemblance.

It's not a bad sculpt. But it's let down by a very bland paint job. Actually I first saw it on the Forgeworld website by following the email link. And honestly, first glance at the smaller pic on their website, I didn't even realize it WAS painted. My first thought was honestly, "Oh, Forgeworld must be showing up a greenstuff original with some kind of hard white sculpting medium feathers tacked on. I find these days I'm just sick of the official Games Workshop writing style. "The 'Preyton'" (sp) isn't just mean, it's evil. It wants to kill you because it hates you." ...just like every goddamned monster in this setting. They've written themselves into a corner. In order to impress the kiddies everything is so GRIMDARK that nothing stands out anymore. With as eager as everything in the Warhammer universe is to kill everyone (and as many giant evil things there are now that the new edition seems to want every army to have colossal monsters and monstrous cavalry) , it's amazing that anyone in the Warhammer universe lives long enough to make it out of pre-school. Everything in the world is evil and wants to burn down your village. You probably shouldn't even trust your furniture. I bet it's GRIMDARK too. Your dresser probably has skills on it somewhere. I've seen the way it looks at you. It's out to get us.

I really really dislike this model. The picture in MA is rather majestic (for an "evil, evil, naughty beast"), but that pose is horrible, the wings are...awkward...
And yet, I can't help but notice that this seems to be one of the best-sculpted pieces I have seen in a while...and, yeah. The paintjob is not doing it any favors.

Not a massive fan... I think they need to A up their paintjobs on the WF stuff, and B start working with some different morphologies and forms... that thing looks like a cross between a Jabberslythe and a Vampire Dragon to me... Why couldn't they just make it Stag like in body form and not just slap antlers on it?

I think the goal was to make it clear that this is some kind of hideous, unnatural beast so morphology kind of goes out the window when Chaos mutations are involved.
I mean, the description implies that the Great Stags of Bretonnia and Athel Loren are captured and then dragged before a Herdstone to be mutated by the Ruinous Powers.
The paintjob is one I like--but you know how my tastes run for paintjobs, MT.
Go realistic or go home.

I agree, the sculpt is nice and the pose is very organic and interesting. I think this is just a piss poor paintjob, like 95% of all Warhammer Forge's models...
the Colossal Squiq is an awesome model with a truly terrible paintjob, as well as the Vermin Lord...

I am confused, do 90% of posters just agree with the person before them? At first everyone was saying it was terrible, then when someone said it wasn't bad everyone started saying they liked it. I am really confused. Anyway, it looks nice I guess, don't play fantasy, but it is certainly a demented looking beast.
