An appeal to all you musicians out there:
As I've recently been having guitar lessons (still a novice at the moment), I've been looking for a replacement for my Squier Stratocaster. I came across a guitar my father had bought for about £500-600, about 7-8 years ago from a shop which has since closed down. I've trawled through websites trying to identify it, but to no avail. No idea on the specific model, but it's a Gibson, made in the US, and from running the serial number through various websites, it's dated from anywhere between 1964-1975
Photos below:
If you can see from the photos, it's pretty worn on places, especially the first 5 frets. The pickups however, appear to be in a much better condition than the rest. I don't know if this is just because they wouldn't experience much wear and tear, or wherever they've been replaced/modified over the years.
Further detail on the body.
Serial Number: 250002
Made In U.S.A
Can anyone give me any information about this guitar?
Thanks

Is it a bolt on neck? that would narrow it down where gibsons are concerned.

I believe it to be a Gibson L6-S.

Either the Midnight Special or the Deluxe depending on whether its a bolt on, either way it's quite rare.

Yes it's a bolt-on neck. Either way, the L6-S looks the most similar out of all the ones I've looked at online. Automatically Appended Next Post: Acutally, a Google search of the L6-S came up with this site, which looks just about exactly the same.

Yep, its definitely a Midnight special L6-S
Serial number dates it at 74/75
Looks a real nice guitar, and I generally dislike gibsons.

Thanks very much for your help, was surprised to see that it's quite rare, I had assumed it was just a custom one.

No worries at all, I like puzzles and I like guitars, so it's all gravy.

So apparently, there was only 2000 Midnught Specials produced by Gibson. Is there a way I could find out how much one would be worth?

Oh, I reckon it's worth at least a hundred quid. You'd better sell it to me, just be on the safe side.

Thats a gem! I would expect $800-$1500 US depending on the means at which you try to sell. Worth more to a collector. The guitar store will try to steal it in a trade. I would keep it. You can't buy quality like that for less than $2000 nowadays.

That is an extremely nice Gibson you have there.
If you want to find out for certain what year it was made, and other fine details. You can contact Gibson with these same pictures, and they will look it up with the number stamped on the back of the headstock.
I had to do this with a very customized SG 200 I got at a used instrument shop, and then tried to identify.

Update: After finally working out the model of this guitar, I've been somewhat obsessed with finding as much information about the Midnight Special as possible. By looking at this site, it appears that only 647 Wine Red models were made from 1974-76. With this in mind now it's just down to getting a more accurate method of finding the precise year in which it was built. As the serial number is 250002 I'm thinking it could be #002 out of the entire batch. Can anyone else shead some light on this? Thanks.
