Now I know the Brain Boyz created the race of orks out of a mixture of flesh and fungi.
I know they created the Orks to protect themand I know they eventualy (possibly) devolved into the gretchins.
But what about snotlings, were they created to serve the brain boyz or are they moss which has been mutated by the orks chemical waste (probably from the Mek's workshop)???

actually they devolved into snotlings not gretchin.
it says in the 5th edition Ork codex.
As for where the gretchin come from, no idea no reference inthe codex. but i think they must be a kind of premature ork, a spore spawns too early and instead a grot pops out.

Actually I think it was that the Snotlings may have been the smart orks that devolved. The Grots/grechins have a clear place in the Orkish ecosystem/kulture. The snotlings are the odd ones out.
The fluff is pretty solid on the Orks being a creation of the Old Ones these days. Which isn't to say they HAVE to be (all fluff is valid, all fluff is wrong and whatnot), but currently all signs point to the Orks being created a) to fight the Necrons and b) possibly as a kind of galactic 'immune system'.
So the Snotlings may have once been their handlers and leaders, as well as a point of connection/control between the Old Ones and the Orks.
/* pure speculation */
An interesting theory is that the Old Ones may have been responsible for distributing the fungus responsible for keeping the snotlings smart as a form of control over their weapon. They make the Orkish leaders small and weak, and totally dependent on the Old Ones to maintain their position in Orkish society. "Do what we say or devolve into little idiots who get pushed around and beaten by the other orks". Then the Old Ones disappear, and, oops, the snotlings are doomed.

Who says the Brain Boyz arn't the old ones and the orks just called them the brain boyz. In fact the old ones might have purpusfuly became snotlings to hide from the Necrons and are just wating for there children to wipe the acursed Metal Men and there C'tan masters from the face of the galaxy so they may once again retake there empire and pick up there work were they left of?

Certainly valid. The fluff merely states (in very uncertain terms) a) the Old Ones created the Orks b) the Brain Boyz created the orks as protection, but when the orks ate all their intelligence inducing fungus they devolved, most likely into snotlings.
Either of those two facts could be wrong, as they are both presented as legends, or they could both be correct, or they could be partially correct. It's up to the reader to interpret it. I just like to keep as much fluff as possible in my personal canon, and only dismiss fluff as outright wrong if it is directly and routinely contradicted.
Personally I don't like the idea of the Old Ones becoming snotlings. It seems odd as the snotlings are generated as part of the ork ecosystem, which would effectively mean the orks ARE the old ones. The whole theory kind of comes out of left field. But hey, if that is your interpretation, all fluff is valid.

Yup. Snotlings are for firing out of the Shokk Attack Gun, and for having some of the best models Citadel ever had.

Food and ammo yeah but punching bags are made from gretchin.
Snotlings raise squigs and the fungi that are used for beer, medication and food.
On a side note I've always had the idea that the ork kulture starts as wild squigs.
The next generation of fungus produces snotlings who feed off of squigs and protect the mushroom patch.
Next come the gretchin who begin the construction of the basic camp (clearing brush because its flammable ect.)
Then the Orks proper crawl from the mud and begin the true kulture.

Unlikely that snotlings are Old Ones hiding out. The Old Ones were wiped out from the galaxy with the only mentioned "survivor" being a head on life support held by the Necrons of the Nihilikh Dynasty (or so heavily implied). And also, one would imagine that when the Crons went to sleep that that would have been thee opportune time to wipe out the Crons.
And sadly, the C'tan are now the slaves

Gods? There are no gods. Merely existences, obstacles to overcome.

Well what if they hide as theis snotling for so long they have actualy become the stupid green monstures and don't know how to change back and have fogoten most things.
And besides your idea only works if the old ones became snotlings after the Necrons went to sleep (which would have been pointles)!

They are good for stomping. Also they double as handy field rations. there is a very old joke off a GW audio tape along the lines of " whats the difference between jumping on a snotling and jumping on a trampoline? You need to take your boots off to jump on a trampoline"
