The Repair functions are significantly better, in the Fluff, than in the gameplay. Necrons repair on the spot, for all the damage taken. They basically win by a battle of attrition. Some Specific Overlords have a lot going for them, like Imotekh and Trazyn. Just read up on all of them to find out more.

The most recent and best example of just how good necron Overlords are in fluff is in the last Word Bearers book. They are fighting this Necron Lord who is made entirely of scarabs and therefore is basically invincible because anytime they land a blow, the scarabs just part and their blades just go straight through. Luckily for the Word Bearers, they arent fighting him to kill him, just take an artifact he is carrying. In short, most Necron Overlords would be a match for a Demon Prince(not all of them, like Demon Primarchs for example), but this is not represented in their rules because then Necrons would be too good at melee and shooting.

Basically, if Necron Overlords where accurately represented, they would be over-powered on the table top. Then again, alot of things would.

As far as gimmicks?

Well, one of them can travel through time and murder, say, your great-grandfather to prevent you from ever having been born so that you totally cannot mess with his plans once he returns to the current space-time continuum... but this has all sorts of side-effects he doesn't want to deal with so he normally doesn't do this sort of thing. Unless he does and it all works out alright in the end.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

Necron Overlords have bested several notable characters in the fluff, Sicarrus of the Ultramarines loses 1v1 to a Lord, Helbrecht Loses to Immotehk.

The general gist is that they allow themselves to get hit, and rely on their repair systems to fix them up, while landing powerful counter-blows while their opponent can't block.
(Basically, they just out-last them, minus Obyron, he actually carves people up fairly easily)

I reckon that the Necrons' display in the fluff differs as much as that of the Space Marines. Thus, I don't think it is possibly to come to a general conclusion - the more into detail you want to go, the more it just depends too much on what sources you're looking at. Or which ones you'd want to dismiss.

Also in the souldrinkers' book Hellforged, the main character exhaustes himself, but defeats a necron lord, only to see it rise again and get him in a crushing deathgrip, the intervention of allies is the only thing that saves him

They are physically stronger than Space Marines, and a great deal tougher due to a lack of vital organs as well as their ability to repair most forms of damage.

Imotekh is notable for besting Helbrecht, one of the most capable swordsmen in the entire Imperium, in melee combat, not through superior skill or swiftness, but by simply tanking everything Helbrecht threw at him.

I wouldn't say they are nearly on par with a Daemon Prince on average though, at least in single combat.

Even then you have some that could possibly even have the same fun system Trazyn has. If you do manage to kill him, all you've done is destroy one of his decoy bodies while his mind just flows to the next.
