After discovering that I can get them both far cheaper from Amazon than I can from Steam (£37 cheaper if I buy both), I've hit a bit of a brick wall.

A good lot of standalone expansions have content that you cannot access without first having the original game, but having bought most TW expansions with the actual game in Gold packs and the likes, I've never found out if this is true for the TW series.

So, if I do buy FotS, will I need to buy the original S2 with it in order to have a more complete experience? Or does FotS carry everything over?

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

No. Fall of the Samurai has a slightly altered campaign map, different factions, and different units. You shouldn't miss out on anything.

Ask yourself which era is more interesting; Sengoku Jidai or the Boshin War? What kind of weapons do you want? If guns, rifles, Ironclads, railways and the like are more appealing to you than spears, bows and whatnot, then you want Fall of the Samurai.

I find Fall feels a bit more simplistic though, and lacks the same options in the campaign.

He already ordered it. I made him do it, with a fork.

If they still had the 'Battle' and 'Campaign' difficulty settings I'd say go for an Easy campaign, but it's really not worth it for the battles since the AI is just as dumb no matter what setting it's on.

The way difficulty affects battles in Total War games is that either you or the AI (depending on your setting) gets given buffs your units or theirs; buffed units won't break so fast, will be more skilled, etc. It effectively allows you or the AI to 'cheat'. If you want a realistic experience then you want normal difficulty. Nevertheless I play Shogun 2 on hard as there's no campaign difficulty setting.

I havent bought Fall yet, but Shogun 2 is very good (right up until the 'Realm Divide', then its just a giant clusterfeth). It does just depend on what units you want to use really...

Pretty sure the AI gets a bit smarter on higher difficulty settings as well Henners. As in there isnt just the AI flowchart that goes 'High Ground in deployement Zone?' Yes? Stay on Hill, No, run forwards in a line while sending any cavalry units round the back to be destroyed un supported (this is usually the general....).

Its the same with Napoleon, with 'Have Cannons?' as the beginning instead....
