**Disclaimer!** In this P&M blog you will see me complain about the perceived cack-handedness of other, anonymous hobbyists that have sold me their unwanted models on ebay. I'm going to mock them, lament their abilities and recommend they never pick up a brush again. I know everybody starts somewhere, and that's fine, but I'm now having to deal with the models and try to make-good with them. It's all part of the fun for me and I'm not singling anyone out nor do I want to offend anyone, not that I think that's actually possible via a poorly painted guardsman.

My newest project has become as much an experiment as it has a traditional 40K army purchase. I decided that I would very much like to have an infantry-heavy Imperial Guard army and, not having won any large sums of cash recently, came to the realisation that it would have to be mainly from ebay. Then I thought why not reconstitute everything from ebay for my own needs? It'll take longer, but it will be cheaper and give me more time between purchases to focus on repairing and re-painting models to my own liking.

The downside of buying from ebay? Modelling and painting like this:


Now if you click through, you'll notice things like bendy swords, unclipped run-off (how does anyone miss those?) and unthinned paint applied everywhere. To be fair to the person that sold them to me, they're all dusty enough for me to assume they were young and incapable of the rational use of their hands when they committed these crimes.

The joy of ebay is thus:
I paid £30 for something described as "Imperial Guard Lot" and the two distant photos looked like a bunch of guardsmen. What I got was:
Cadian Company Commander Metal
Cadian Medic and Standard Metal
Heavy Weapons Squad
2x Cadian Shock Troops
Cadian Officers with Power Swords Metal
Kasrkin Squad Metal
Cadian Snipers Metal
Cadian with Plasma Gun and Meltagun Metal

and a couple of random metal guardsmen, Total price new, bought today is: £127.50 so that's a huge chunk of value for myself!

So that's where I'm at now. All the metal pieces are sitting in a tub of Dettol waiting to be brushed to death tonight or tomorrow. I'm toying with the idea of airbrushing over the top of the plastics, but the paint is pretty damn thick, it must have taken 6 of the old pots of codex grey to paint these guys, it's as if the paint was thickened rather than thinned, in some sort of protest.

Really like the yellow handle to the sword of the officer though Good luck with this project i will follow it with interest! I have had some good wins on ebay for IG but am also in the process of selling off my IG on ebay as we speak!

That is one bendy arse sword. Still i'd kill for one of those commanders. The only time ive ever seen them on ebay they sell for an absolute mint. That "at ease" guardsmen is pretty swanky too. To bad they sell for heaps as well.

30 quid for all that? Can't ask for a better deal then that can ya.

He's only £6.50 or something new on the website, although I can't find the at ease guardsmen. Also, seeing your from Australia I could believe him costing a lot more for you considering the fun GW like to play with our Australian cousins

But yes, this did turn out to be a good bargain! I was fearing some snap-together guys and got a Kasrkin squad, which I've always liked the look of!

Quick update. I've been painting a guardsman quickly as a tester.

Spray white - basecoat - wash is my ingenious system, only I don't know about the wash yet so I washed it in halves. I also might go for less of a tan and more of a grey cloth.



The left wash (last pic) is better for an all-over sloppy wash, whilst the other - after sloppily washing it on - appears to be better overall as long as it's used in a target-wash fashion. What do you think?

Sir you have made my day. I didn't know you could buy him as a seperate piece now. Though its gonna cost my $18 (12GBP...) So im gonna have to pay almost double what you would. NOT HAPPY JAN!

Still its nice to know i can get him if i want.

Light update today because all I'm doing - so far - is stripping and cleaning up the models. The paintjobs were actually so thick that I didn't notice these monstrosities:



Those metal run-offs were just pressed tightly against the model. WHO DOES THAT?! It's unimaginable to me to think that leaving every piece of flash on a model has ever been done. Why didn't he go the whole way and just paint the sprues and glue them to the base?!

So today I'm doing this. The price I pay for a bargain!

There's been movement! I broke out the airbrush and hit them all with a coat of VGC Heavy Brown (Can't find any of my khaki colours, so I'll substitute!)



I'm going to start hitting them with the green now and before long they'll be done and I can start looking for my next lot on ebay. I'm hoping I can get hold of another 'job lot' but the whole process will be expedited if I can sell my Tau!

This is the best part of this whole thing for me, aside from some missed mold lines and things that irk me, I love the transformation after a simple basecoat with the airbrush and when I consider I got a quarter of a guard army for about £30, I'm a very happy boy!
